Question Turbo synchronization?

When i change out my bad turbos for new ones, will they have to be timed, or resynchronized in way? Someone told me they would have to be, I just want to be safe.

Yes, in the same way that you time your wheels when you have removed them for any reason. Have you ever seen what happens when you remove wheels and don't put them back in time when you reinstall them?

All bullshit aside, no, you just bolt them on, and they work. :P

He is talking about the turbo "clocking." It's basically the relationship of the exhaust housing to the cartridge to the compressor housing. They need to be lined up correctly with respect to one another or they won't fint on the car correctly. if the cartridges are not lined up correctly to the exhaust housing, the oil and water feed/return lines won't line up. If the compressor housing is not lined up right, the y-pipe won't fit together or fit right in the car. Get the picture?

This would only apply if the turbo unit has been disassembled or handled roughly though. If they were removed, handled with care, not molested, and re-installed, they should fit correctly.

Do a search for turbo installs. IIRC, there are some issues about getting the separate bits of the housings to lbe aligned correctly so that the rest of the connections (intake and exhaust, oil fittings, etc) line up correctly. I think Steve Stover on the mailing list had this issue when installing fresh '99s on his car.

The only other potential problem I can think of is the location of the pills in the acctuator lines for pre-spool and turbo-control. At some point these were moved into the housing itself. Again do a search.

Hope this helps,

-bill
