Sweet!!! I used nothing but Amsoil in my two previous FC's, am will switch asap in my FD. I am a true believer in Amsoil, works great, but it does have a price.

Thumbs up Nice links

The ash is extremely low with Amsoil!

I knew about, Red Line, Mobil 1 and Quaker State but i've never heard of or even seen that brand. Does anyone know where to buy it?

Yes, it would have been nice to see Royal Purple in the comparison as well.

amsoil is sold just about anywhere. check out www.rotorsportsracing.com they sell it there. it is very expensive.. . still, it is considered the best. the sight is an amsoil enthusiast sight. . . i think. royal purple may be too competetive too list. you know how it goes. haha. what was everyones take on the castrol syntec product? i use it . . . have had no problems. . . but i had heard that it was the worst of the synthetics. . . .it didnt seem like that to me.

Are there any recent oil filter comparisons? I'm most interested the performance of the Bosch high-performance and the Fram X2.

Also, who sells/makes a magnetic oil drain plug for the FD, and where can I get one? Are all drain plugs the same?

hey, jonski

im not sure about the magnetic drain plug. .. we used to use those on cobra helicopters. . . but i doubt that would fit, haha. fram makes a cool drain for all cars though. all you have to do is put this plug in and when you are ready to change oil you put the adapter on it........no mess. pretty cool. you could always strap one of those rare earth magnets to your plug (or even drill a whole in it and insert it . . . or whatever)

A friend of mine used to use Syntec. Then he went into a shop that did engine work and talked to the guys there. They used to use Syntec, then switched to Mobil 1. The Sytec engine had tons of carbon, while the Mobil 1 engine looked like new.

With Mobil 1 for 275,000 miles in 1988 Honda Civic, driven hard in 8 years, the inside looked like new. Tolerances were within new spec. I don't use Mobil 1 in my RX7 though. synthetics were not designed to be burned.

The whole purpose of synthetics is to emulate or improve upon dino oil's good qualities, while reducing or eliminating its negative qualities. Low ash is surely a positive aspect. It's the most important one in 2-cycle oil.

Unless I am mistaken about what I have read and learned here, the ash content gives a good pointer towards the results of combustion. While some synthetics weren't originally designed to be combustable, the industry has moved to make them such. Mazda's warning about using synthetics were based upon synthetics at least 1 or 2 generations ago, which had lousy ash content.

The only problem I have is that before I came to that conclusion, I bought a case of Castrol GTX. I'll just use it up 50/50 with Red Line then go all synthetic.

I bought a case of Red Line. I didn't realize Amsoil had come down in price. I'd swear about 6 years ago, when I bought some once but it was 7-9/quart. I didn't buy it again and went along with Mobil 1. When the Red Line is used up, I will shift to Amsoil. The high flash point and the insanely low ash content looks like a winner to me.

Sorry about the late response Jonski.

I buy it from a number of places comparing. Standard B&M (Brick and Mortar as opposed to Internet) retailers like K-Mart, Walmart and Pepboys.

Non synthetic oil comes in cases of 12. Synthetics just appear to be half cases of 6. That is true for Castrol and Mobil 1.
The Red-Line I got (from the internet) was a full case of 12.

Prices run about 20 for the Castrol non-syn, and 24-28 for the Mobil 1 and Syntec half cases. The Red-Line ran me 59 (I think) for the case + shipping, I forgot exactly.

When I want to order from the internet, I either search everywhere with Yahoo (Red Line and Sale) or use the manufacturers links to their distributors/retailers.

Do you suppose anyone would group-buy on cases of Mobil1 15w-50?
