stuttering and backfiring

Hi guys, I recently purchased my 1st Rx-7 which is a montego blue 93 with a pretty long list of modifications already done, including a rebuilt motor, new apex seals, new rotor housings, and a streetport. Anyway I just bought the car the other day and on the test drive and the first night driving everything was fine and I was quite impressed with the amount of power in comparison to my old ls1 Trans Am. But today i was getting on it a bit on a deselete straight away and on my way back into town at about 3K the motor started stall pretty badly, it didnt cut out completly but I had to pull off and turn it off. I let it cool a bit a restarted only to hear a fan like sound I hadn't heard before (the radiator maybe?). It was running better but still something wasn't quite right. I went WOT in 2nd when it backfired pretty hard and felt like the engine was really shuddering. My first thought was that I was running rich so I called the previous owner who agreed that was probably the reason and that the car needs a dyno tune. Anyway, has anyone had similiar expereinces?? Thanks!

yep, hopefully if it has a long list of mods it has a decent Ecu, or at least the right fueling for the mods, doubt your hitting fuel cut at that rpm, but never hurts to check

Well this is just off the top of my head but...

greddy 2 row front mount intercooler
greddly intake elbow
1300 cc injectors
supra TT fuel pump
powerdyne radiator
downpipe
cat back
custum intake
non seq turbo set up

and it also has an apexi central command unit, that according to the prev. owner is set to run rich

Probably needs tuning. My boss and roomate Steve Kan is probably one of the best tuners in the country. He used to live in Georgia and still has family there. Maybe I can arrange for him to tune your car next time he is in the area.

I drove it some more today and noticed its a problem with the boost. It is hesitant at first and when you get higher rpms it spike above 10 psi... I'm now afraid soethings about to blow... Any more advice?

Sounds like someone put all those mods in and never tuned it for Power, be CAREFULL !!! I just blew my apex seal 2 days ago, on a poorly tuned ECU, wait to tune before you use your lead foot !.... The only good thing is it seems to run rich, but that doesn't mean that there isn't a lean cell waiting to be hit at WOT and 14 PSI ....

I had the same exact problem only mods

Trust exhaust...brembo brakes...race clutch...and hks bov,

does the same thing

between 2k-3k rpm it does it,
but giving it a little more gas fixes the prob, but the thing is, u have to give it more gas everywhere u go, to u are always over the speed limit and cant drive slow, any think it could be any of the following:
clogged injectors, cause maybe hwen u give it more gas the injectors push gas harder so the pressure doesnt affect it if its clogged or not, i dunno thats just what i think could get the prob, anyone got any help on that, or what if, its the turbo tripping out and doesnt know when to boost when you are on the gas too lightly?

Im in milledgeville, about 20 minutes outside Macon, and yeah its the Apexi power FC... But I don't think giving it more gas helps in the lower gears atleast. In first it's taking it almost to 4K to start boost and then it wants to spike... It sucks being afraid to get on it in your new car :-(
