Strut Bar Camera Mount

I whipped this up at work over lunch (prototype).

I have an old/heavy video camera & tried it out on the street, Kick ***!!!! I can't wait to hit the track

The reason for the post is to see if anyone else might be interested in one.

I know you can buy them from some racer outfit, but this is designed to fit with the pass/trunk divider installed. Takes 30 sec to install or remove & Is very secure.

It's made out of 7075 T6 0.20 angle escrusion, so it's not heavy, but very strong

My only complaint is the camera is mounted waaaay behind the seats & my POS video camera has no remote, so it's a bitch to turn on & off

I like the idea, but I have an M2 bar that replaces the stock strut tower bar. It's basically got a bigger square cross section. Also, the IOPort and other commercial mounts have some type of urethane (?) bushing that helps absorb shock before it gets to the camera.

Can you make a version to fit bigger bars and include some type of vibration damping?

I'd buy one if you can make it fit an M2 bar. What's your email?

I think it looks good. The foam on the stock STB will absorb most of the shock like a urethane bushing. If you use a mount like this on a bar w/o padding artowar2 is right it will need some type of dampening.

That looks tight! If I had a camera I'd buy one.

Great Idea Sled:

If it's anything like your pedals it'll be nice. I put my own together a couple of months ago. Total parts at Home Depot about $4 plus I had to sacrifice an old camera mount. Works like a charm and I do thing the covering on the stock STB is enough of a vibration damper, since mine works great at the track.

The IOPorts evidently run about $100 so you ought to be able to kick ***.

I like yours more cause it keeps the divider in place which mine doesn't.

Good luck.

A friend and I built a camera mount for my car as well. Basically we just took a piece of 1" steel tubing the same length as the strut bar and welded flanges to it about 2" long at each end. It simply bolts into place sharing the same bolts the strut bar uses and runs parallel to the stock bar, only about 2" higher. We welded a mounting plate for the camera onto the bar and install a 1/16" thick piece of foam rubber under the cam when mounting. The cargo divider can stay in place and the mount does not deform the stock tower bar since it in fact does not touch it. I simply bolt the mount in for race weekends and remove it afterwards. Works beautifully.

Don't forget to attach a safety strap to the camera that is anchored around the tower bar. If that thing were to vibrate loose you don't want it smashing you in the back of the head.

My divider has never been removed, and I hope to keep it that way :)

So, I'd definitely be interested in one of these, please keep me posted.

(what do you think about gluing on some felt pieces to keep it from leaving any marks?)

Excellent, thanks for all the feedback.

IM actually thinking about getting a M2 strut bar, so I should be able to adapt the design to fit. The hard part sounds like the shock absorption. Would thicker foam between the mount & camera work??? Or would the camera just wiggle around more?

The pics don't help much, but I do have some dense form tape for the camera to rest on. I was also thinking about incorporating a stainless steel lanyard in case that sucker did ever came loose

I can add foam tape around the sections that clamp to the strut bar to protect the finish.

Pricing would be around $50, for the stock bar version. IM not ready to sell any, still in the design phase. I'll post an ad in the 3rd gen "for sale" section soon

Once again, thanks for all your feedback.

I'd be interested, but i have a cusco CF rear strut bar...if theres any way to adapt the mount to spherical strut bars that you can think of, i'd be in for it.
The foam idea seems feasible.

IM not sure about the Dia. of the Cusco bar, but my friend makes a camera mount that fits a 1 1/4" round bar.
A little higher asking price, but it's CNC machined & very beefy.

Hey Sled:

Have your buddy (or you) email me the info on the mount for the round bar. My buddy has that in his 911 (to attach his 5 point harness to) and would prob be in the market for a camera mount.

Lemme know.
