smoked my clutch. need advice on a new one.

tia. thanks for the input. i m running a t78 single on a stock port. i m running 15 psi and making around 380+ whp and over 315 rtq when my act s/s went out. it lasted a whole day of fun i had no problems when i ran 11.5 psi and making 330rwhp. what clutch is good for what i have and poss more boost in the future. don't really know the diff between a four puck/ six puck set up. oh yeah, how easy is to change the clutch. any special tools needed? kvn

I speak from no experience, but:

Overbuy on the clutch. If you get more than you need, it'll probably last longer. You'll also have to drop the motor or transmission a certain amount out to get to the clutch.

Kev...you ever consider a twin plate clutch? I heard they last forever, and hold an incredible amount of torque. Oh and a puck style clutch is NOT street friendly...

As for changing the clutch, to do it easily, you need a lift, a good socket set, a good # of rachets, and a long *** pipe (to turn the rachet lol...some of the bolts are torqued REAL tight! lol). If you know what you're doing, you can be in and out in 3 hours flat...

I would recomend a SPEC stage 3, its good for 700rwt wich is more than a rotory is going to put down. It is a sprung 4 puck clutch. Or even a duel friction centerforce (a little heaveir pedal tho).

The number of pucks dosent realy mater what you want is holding powere.

For a streetable clutch you will want a disk that is sprung so that you have a smother release. To try to street a unsprung clutch is a PITA, its is either engaged or disingaged.

Also make sure you have your flywheel resurfaced so you dont get ant chatter with your new clutch, it cost like $25.

You did break it in didn't you? If you slammed on it the first day it was installed, it's gonna break.

I have heard that the Exedy hyper single or twin plate clutches are extremely good clutches. I hear that they are very streetable and the twin will hold all the power you can throw at it.

Just looked at OptionImports.com and the 93-95 RX-7 SPEC stage 3 is good for 519 torque. The one for the LS1 is good for 700 torque. The clutch runs $472 for the RX-7.

You can do it on jackstands just fine if you want. That's how I did mine. Just not as convienent but still not hard at all.

I'm not sure how you broke you ACT S/S. I have it in my car and when I went single everyone told me that clutch was plenty for the power I wanted to put down. Are you sure you broke it in and everything with no problems?

Obviously the cheapest solution here is to get another disk from ACT that will work with your pressure plate. FAR cheaper than getting a whole new setup.

You should realy check out the Pineapple Racing sprung hub 6 puck clutch. I just recently put one in my car and love it. 400+rwhp seems no problem for it. I posted a message about it just recently....CJ

Here it is....https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showthread.php?t=349158

**** i never broke it in, maybe that's why it's gone. it's barely a year old with about 20+ passes on the 1320. i never had a problem with it until i had it tuned to 15 psi. there's oil all over my garage floor where the transmission sits. i will jack it up and investigate. so all i have to do is get a new pressure plate from act instead of replacing the whole thing? thanks. kvn
