Are single turbo FDs smog legal?

I live in Cali so almost everything fails smog. Provided that the exhaust emission is equal to or below the DMV requirements, will they fail you if you got the single?

Not legal. But, if properly done, single turbos FDs CAN be clean enough to pass the sniffer, without cheating. You'll never pass the visual but most smog techs will overlook that if you can pass the sniffer. Its just so much work to tune it properly that most people don't bother, they just find a way to cheat the test. I'd like to see more people try to make clean running single turbos, good tuning is good for everyone . Poor partial throttle tuning is the lazy man's solution!

Sheesh, the last smog guy that looked at my *stock* engine bay freaked out. He told me, "I don't even want to touch anything in your engine bay, it looks so complicated!" Remember that the CA smog test is composed of several parts (functional, emissions, visual). The visual portion you can probably get away with, if you can convince the smog tech that the vac lines go where they're supposed to, and all your hoses appear to be hooked up properly, etc. Functioal test you can probably get away with too. They want to see that your emissions contols are in place... but a lot of smog techs willl let you go on this one, since the FD's emissions controls (EGR, ACV/secondary air injection, EVAP) are not obvious to the inexperienced eye The emissions (tailpipe) part shouldn't be a problem, provided that your motor is running properly (good compression, fresh oil/plugs/fuel filter/good tune for partial throttle as has been mentioned already).

I'm worried about having to take in my sequentials to be smogged. I think it will pass the sniffer just fine but if they see the shiny aluminum tubes connect to two fat HKS sponges, they might **** a brick.

The reason I bring up this single turbo question was because I am redoing my rats nest and I'm thinking just how much cleaner the engine bay can be.

Thanks for all the replies.

Most intakes are actually legal....hell, the HKS one even has official CARB approval. Search the big smog thread or search using my username....I've posted the CARB rules sheet a few different times. I've passed with both the PFS and RX7Fashion boxes.

Like Nathan said, even if it does pass smog at lower rev/boost, most places won't even bother to test because it doesn't pass Visual inspection...

Most intakes are not CARB legal. HKS and RS Akimoto are the only two for the FD. I had over five places refuse to smog my car with Apexi FMIC. Fist thing they said was "oh, shiny pipes it's not legal". They didn't care if it was, they wouldn't test it at all. Intake is the #1 visual fail. I failed on my CRX a while back with DC Sports headers which are CARB legal but the orginal version did not have the CARB #'s visable. I had to buy new headers. The K&N intake they recognize and don't ask about. My friend failed with his RS Akimoto on his CRX.

It's unfortunate that most smog techs don't know the rules themselves...they are in black and white in the smog manual...and ANY intercooler is legal with the stock turbos. Most intakes are technically legal too.

I believe the green sponge HKS is legal, but not the yellow race ones.. Sorry i dont remember their names off the top of my head.

(Despite that..... I'd rather have yellow over the green) I think even if the intakes are not DOT, wouldnt it be rather easy to get them refereed? Assuming that all that is keeping your car from being street legal are the intakes..
