Assuming you didn’t buy a car without an oil filter, so what’s on there now?

It’s hard to imagine a smaller filter than the OEM size…..

The shop in Japan that was servicing my car before I imported it was using R-Magic oil filters which are shorter than the factory filters but I used a Factory filter and it still fit with the pedestal. I don't know if mine would be thinner than yours. You can see the filter height difference in my thread here Restoration Thread

This is the oil filter that was being used, they do not have part numbers on them but you can source them from a few shops, not sure if anybody in the states sells them thought. Shipping from Japan does not take long and isn't reall that expensive either from what I have found R-Magic Racing Energy Oil Filter 6pc Set - M20XP1.5 68Dx65Hmm - RHDJapan

mobil m108a with the pedestal from banzai racing to eliminate the sandwich plate and retain your sensors

When I get home I will look at the part numbers for you. I have some tall and short mazda filters. I had the same issue with a sandwich plate.

just change the filter pedestal and eliminate the sandwich, many options are available

This is the OEM next to the R-Magic, OEM still cleared (barely) with the adapter on

The R Magic filter is shorter than factory, most likely because of the raised pedestal for the oil pressure and temp sensors
