My 90w gear oil is visually thicker than my Engine motor oil, I run 20w 50. This chart shows they are the same viscosity. Mind blown

Yeah, that’s the kicker…. gear oil usually seems way thicker.

Keep in mind the chart shows the viscosity at 100 degrees, so maybe it actually is thicker at certain temperature ranges. Gearboxes shouldn’t be quite as hot as turbocharged REs…

I was thinking the same thing from just observing how the two lubes pour from the bottles when working with them in the shop... But according to that chart posted, it appears the two different SAE viscosity measurements/ratings are both done at 100*C, while our anecdotal observations are made at regular room temperature, about 25*C or so.
