Low Mileage FD, To-Be Riced...
This post came up on the gearheads livejournal community:
http://community.livejournal.com/gearheads/887919.html
1994 Mazda RX-7 Touring Edition.
17,000 original miles. (!!!!!!!)
Mint body & Interior, covered or garaged every winter
manual transmission
twin turbos work like new
The only problems with it are that it needs a starter motor, and the brakes might be seized. Not really a big deal. Other than that, maybe new tires & a clutch eventually and we're(my fiance and I) good to go. The first plans we have for it are to install new intakes, new rims, stainless steel brake lines, and a custom exhaust. After that? Not really sure, maybe some gauge pods, a wing, new paint, whatever comes around.
Anyone have an RX-7? Any tips on the rotary engine? We know how it works, but we've never actually worked on one.
Oh, and:
Also, the car was only $4,000. Not too expensive, and we won't find one for less.
Damn right they won't find one for less... wish I could find some sucker to sell me an FD for $4k.

Why do you think it is going to be "riced out"?
Mods mentioned, make no reference to which brands will be used.
Even then...it is that person's car. Not yours.
I don't see what the big deal is.

Put two and two together. Someone buys a car and then posts on a livejournal community, which does not specialize in rotaries, for "advice" on what to do?
They don't know anything about the car or how the rotary works, and they're already planning modifications to it.
That's my definition for ricing... "performance" modifications that you don't understand.
It just means the car is their new guineapig as they learn more about cars. Nothing wrong with that, everyone has to do it. But some people are smart enough to not grab a low mileage beauty to do it. There's a lot of cars that are more suitable for learning on than a low mileage FD that someone could restore and keep stock, as a collector.
And sure, it's their car. And so are all those Honda Civics out there their owners' cars. That's not exactly a sound argument against what I'm saying here.
My opinion is that they should sell it or trade it for a similar FD with higher mileage. You know someone will pay more for the low mileage FD (that they only bought for $4k) than they will pay for a higher mileage one, even one in better condition. And both of them are going to need to be rebuilt anyway, unless this FD was stored with extreme care to idle the engine every couple of weeks, which is possible but unlikely. The things that can't be easily restored are: a) factory paint (which is first on the ricer's list of things to go) b) interior (also high on the list for ricers, since they can't afford the hardware modifications) c) original engine parts (no doubt with a lack of understanding of rotaries and a penchant for blow off sounds, a ricer with an older FD is blowing the engine sooner than later.)
It's not a big deal, just sad to see a good FD go to waste.

Hmmm... it says they bought the car for $4k. Somehow, I'm thinking that it's not really a "low mileage beauty". Whatever they do to it though, it doesn't seem like it's going to be too bad. Just some new paint, candy red's not really my thing but meh, exhaust, and some rims. Pretty mild compared to some of the FD's I've seen on ebay and other places.

What about that last line?
"After that? Not really sure, maybe some gauge pods, a wing, new paint, whatever comes around. "
Woo, a wing and gauge pods... in a candy red car (no problem with that, apart from the fact that it's getting rid of black - which I personally find way better looking - factory paint for a very common FD color).
Any guesses as to what shade of yellow nailpolish the interior is going to be? ;P Stinks of ricer to me... "modifications" one doesn't understand.

Bob... are you like 14 or something...?
who cares how his screen name is typed out. BOB quit being a hater because you couldnt get your hands on a 17k fd for 4000. its their car let them do what they want!
Bob, you could always contact the guy and steer him here or to the List.
Bob, why don't you buy the car from him? Offer him 3-4K over what he paid.
You don't buy old things in good condition just to use... it'd be like going to the Barrett-Jackson auction and getting a mid 50's truck meticulously restored to original condition, taking it home and throwing a "nice exhaust" that your neighbor welded up for you for a good price on it and using it to haul your friend's couch to his new apartment. Sure, it's your ******* car... but that doesn't mean you're not a douchebag.
Now don't anyone cry because you think I'm just a hater and you don't have a clue. This thread is dead, wash my hands of it. Obviously no respect for RX-7s here!

whats ibtl?
anyway i can see bobs point after he used he analogy but this car isnt 50 years old its only 14 and being 14 its just old not collectors old. although many people view this car as a collectors car, it isnt a old school jag or something. not yet anyway. if you hate the fact that this car is "going into the wrong hands" and love Fds so much then go take out a loan and give them an offer they cant refuse. if not, whats the point of your hatin. and yes it is hating.

Someone already did that anyway, so I didn't need to. Not like it will help them anyway... it just means you'll see another post like you see all the time, asking for advice way after the fact: "HEY I HAV FD LOWMILEZ N I WAS SHOWING OFF MY NEW BOV 2 MYE FRENDZ N LEIK MY MTOR MADE A SOUND LEIK IT WUZ BRAKING, WHY WONT IT START NOW?"
As for the car, it seems to me both here and in the referenced thread you're making outlandish predictions of what the buyer may do to the car, then getting way too worked-up about it. If you care so much about preserving low-mileage FDs, why don't you work a little harder to convince the buyer to adopt your point of view?

little off topic...but the car sure looks Montego Blue to me, not black.
But if its true, thats a hell of a deal for a running low mileage FD. I would jump all over that if I came across it.

i bought my '93 with 29,xxx miles for $17,125 + $800 shipping
these people either:
got scammed
bought a salvage
or perhaps the motor has 17k miles on a rebuild, but the body has much more
i do remember when i sold my last FD, someone stole all my pics and put it up on a wesbite for like $4k. i was selling it for $17,500 on ebay. haha god damn scammers.
---edit---
haha check out what someone commented:

Maybe he is going to install the factory wing, or a 99 spec wing? He did not say GT WING on a stock street car. Those modifications are the stuff a lot of Rx7s have.
Get a clue.
