I pondered on this same question some years ago but first decided that I was going to remove my AC and heating system to lighten the car anyway ( it's a show car for summer months only anyway ). So after all the vents, ducts and hardware associated with the Heater and AC were gone behind the dash, it was easy to see how the carpet went back there. This past summer I removed my tan carpet and dyed it black. So, with all that stuff gone behind the dash I simply cut a slit right behind the audio unit which allowed the carpet to peel back from the driver and passenger sides. Only thing I removed was the center console and seats. Rest came out without problems. I cannot remember how it looked with the heater still in.

There is no cut back there in stock form, MAzda put the carpet in and everything else around it. Remove your console, seats, raise the rear bins, remove the radio and side trim panels in front and rear. Look back thru the radio opening and see if you can get a clear cut from firewall all the way thru to the console. There is a lot of carpet under the console that you don't see or need. It just needs to tuck up under there several inches to stay put ( what I did ). Your cutting instrument needs to be a hobby razor knife - very sharp. The hard rubber under the carpet is the hardest to cut.

I agree...I think I posted a write up or something similar.

The reason the carpet won't come out is that right under the dash, there is a bolt that sticks up and that the carpet is feed thru. Even if you cut it, it's almost impossible to reach that far under to cut the carpet close to the bolt. Believe me! I tried this for a week with some silicon spray to try to ensure that it would slide easily.

After that I looked up how to remove the dash, and literally 15 mins later I had the carpet out. It is really simple to remove the dash. Save your knuckles, remove the dash, get the carpet out...done deal.

takes maybe 30 minutes AT most....

2 bolts on either side of the tranny tunnel.
2 bolts on either side of dash by door
1 bolt front center by windsheild
2 bolts for the hood release
2 bolts for the steering column

thats it

of course you have to take the gauge cluster out, but who hasn't done that before
