removing power steering pulley???

does anyone out there have any good tips on removing the power steering pulley without the use of air. i have a 30 gallon air compressor and i was working with it yesterday and all of a sudden the motor went up, i just have to get it fixed. but im in the process of gettin my motor out of the car and dont want to let that slow me down. i dont know when im gonna have my compressor workin again and i need to get that damn pulley off, any ideas?? i tried using a crowbar to hold the pulley while i took the 17mm wrench and tried to get it off but ended up chipping the edge of the pulley so i dont want to do that again. also do you guys think it would be a good idea to now replace that pully since its chipped or it prolly wont make a difference?? the area where the belt rides isnt damaged at all, just the outer edge. thanks guys ryan

It's tough but can be done. The only good way i can think of to do it, would be take a small screw driver and put it in one of the holes on the pulley, to where the screw driver goes all the way through the pulley. start to turn your wrench on the pulley until you feel the screw driver hit a stop. I say a stop, because i can't remember what it was up against behind the pulley when i got it to stop and hold the pulley from moving. Try also spraying the heck out of the nut with PB penitrating spray (buy it at autozone, 10 times better than WD40). See if that works, it did for me. About the pulley being chipped...it really depends on where you chipped it. If the belt will stay on and the chip is just on the side of the pulley somewhere where it had no effect on rotation, you should be good.
I hope this helps, it's hard to explain in words. Good luck.
