Remember the FD in the 2001 Super Tuner Shootout
Does anyone remember the 3 rotor Fd in the Car and Driver's Super Tuner Shootout in 2001. I had just sold my Fd from high school and reading the article made me realize how big a mistake i had just made. Anyway does anybody know what happened to that car? It was owned by a guy in colorado i think his name was Phil Hamlin maybe. Does anyone know him or the car? The Fd came in second to a twin turbo c5 that bearly won. As i remember the Fd had a hole in the fuel map that made it run extremely rich from 120 to 140 and the it lost alot of points in the 0 to 150 time trial. if it weren't for that it would have taken first. So what happened to that car? That car is why i own an Fd today, so thanks.....for the empty check account.
Thanks for reminding me, too!
I don't know any info about where the car is now or who may own it, but I also remember that article. One of the many reasons why the FD is such a dream car for us.
Good luck!
Good luck!
i have the article right here.
0-60 4.0
100mph 8.4
1/4 mile 12.1 @138.3
Total cost $83588 by Peter Farrell
"massive flat spot in calibration..."
"pressure relieft valves blew off intake manifold"
"radiator hose ruptured in spectacular fashion"
Damn thing had a SMIC in there - the engine looks like it was pushed pretty far back in the chassis.
The car placed 2nd behind the Lingenfelter Covervette.

Kumho V700 Victoracer...not sure if they were used on the drag racing portion but I could understand the 12.1 et with those on there.
Still a nice article to read about. Peter seems to have never found an ecu that he was good at tuning when it caem to 3 rotors. The electromotive tec 2 that was in the 20B I rode in back around 2000 that Peter also did had idle problems.

The article says the car had a T-70 turbo and had 600hp @ 15psi, on pump gas.
All of the cars in the article ran "slow" 1/4 runs.
Lingenfelter twin-turbo vette = 12.1 @128mph, 650 hp
RX7 - 20b - 600 hp - 12.1@123mph
Mallet Corvette, 12.7 @116mph, 625 hp
AutoThority 911 Turbo - 12.2 @119mph, 626 hp.
I have a feeling either the tires, track or measurment equipment are to blame for the lower times. I bet all of these would do much, better on a real drag strip and not a Speedway.

thats a pretty good article, i'd never seen it before, very cool, especially since my last name is lingenfelter (no i'm not related to john). it'd be neat to see the outcome if this thing were running properly.

Seeing how much was spent on this car, it really aggravates me how un-knowledgeable some shops really are on doing custom fab work. Relocating the shiffter to the front access cover was actually one of the easiest fabricated items I fabed for my 20b.
