AB Royal Rally - my thoughts on the event

on Sept 27th, 2015 a small group based out of calgary AB put on the first ever Royal Rally, it was a basic navigational rally, you get a route card in the morning for the frist leg, each leg has 3 checkpoints you have a task you must compleat at each checkpoint. then head to the end point for that leg.

leg 1
we met up at cardell homes for the start of the event, they wanted drivers to show up between 8 and 9 am, with a drivers meeting at 9:30 and the offical start at 10am.

I made it to the start location for 8 am, a few cars where there before us, last min prep was being done on cars (a few cars hadnt picked up the vinyl packages yet and still needed to be logoed) by 9 most cars had shown up. the drivers meeting was a little late to start (first time ever running i can forgive a 5 min late start on that) they quickly went over the rules and asked us to head to our cars. with in a few minutes cars where being handed route cards and set on our way.

first checkpoint was to head to elbow falls and find out how high the drop is

checkpoint 2 - hydrodamn at ghost lake, after hitting checkpoint 1 unfortunetly some drivers figured out they didnt actually need to go to the checkpoints if you could do some quick googleing on your phone.

checkpoint 3 - the nordic center in canmore, to count the flags. then off to banff for the end of leg 1.

banff springs - our park entry, parking, and brunch was all included with the entry fee. they had the courtyard reserved for our cars to park in, brunch was amazing.

bit of a late start to the second leg as a few people where late coming into banff from the first leg.

leg 2- banff back to calgary.

check point 1 - nakiska to get info on what was on the sign

checkpoint 2 - take a picture of your car at mt kidd

checkpoint 3 - bar u ranch to get the name of the statue.

end of leg 2 was at starbellys in seatton.

appatisers and drinks were provided at starbellys (included with entry fee) as well as a small awards ceremony.

i spoke with one of the guys who put on the event after and mentioned that the only real beef i had with the event was that you didnt actually need to go to the checkpoints, they where easly skipable with some googleing. other than that it was a super fun day great spread of cars (everything from exotics to jdm imports, a little light on the american cars, even a few SUVs in there) they said they didnt want to weed out people as long as you had a car and wanted to come they where open to it!

the entry fee of $200 if you where going alone or $250 if you had a co driver was well worth it! the banff portion alone would of been half that price! there was lots of give aways and great social enviroment.

there where a few carless / wreckless drivers on the road but past that it was super fun! they are going to be doing one maybe two more next year. keep an eye out (royalrally.org) hopefully we can see more rotary powered cars in the feild next year!

Man, old school comes back to a new generation. These fun/ social rallies were really popular in the 60's and 70's as a way to have fun with your street car and see the area and socialize. It works when you don't have any tracks to let loose on. You keep the speeds low and the accuracy high.

I am glad you had a lot of fun and it worked for you. Congrats,

Eric
