Rebuild Question

Ok... I took my engine to this rotary specialist, he disassembled it. Both rotors are bad, both rotor housings are scarred beyound repair and the eccentric shaft has minute grove in it. I'm not sure if the shaft needs to be replaced. Considering the amount of money you have to pay for new parts and the fact that the engines don't last, would it be worth it to buy all new parts or get a reman. Has anyone had any experience with remanufactured engines? What are your opinions?

well... as you know, you've mentioned pretty mcuh the entire engine... rotors, housings, shaft.... there ain't much else to it (other than the obvious - electrics, turbo, etc.).

I'd say your decision lies in your confidence with your rotary mechanic. If you think they can do a good job, have them get the parts and do it. If you have any doubt in their abilities, get reman. I've heard both good and bad about remans, so it's hard to say.

I have confidence in the mechanics. They build racing motors for the local guys here. I guess what I should have asked is what is the average people have payed to have their engines rebuilt with porting? I know it can get expensive, but how much is too much?

On an average a rebuild with porting should run you about 3-4 G's. I got mine with a straight rebuild for 2600.00 out the door. For port add an extra 300-500. It depends on your mechanic/shop.

I bought a reman and pulled it apart to port it. The entire motor was out of spec. The apex grooves were chipped and the side housings were grooved. i sent it back and will never consider or recommend a reman ever again.

Depends if that price includes pull and reinstall. What kind of apex seals? 3mm? They have to carefully machine the rotors to go to 3mm. That adds to the price. Stick with 2mm and save yourself a bit of cash.

I use to live in Lubbock, went to TTU. Trying to move back to Lubbock... there's just no job market.

The mechanic left me with the option to find the parts myself, if I can find the parts cheaper then it will save me some cash. So far all I've found is Atkins, Mazdatrix, and Rotorsport Racing. 3700 total in parts. The mechanic is charging me 1900 in labor. The mechanic is able to find parts for less but I'm still looking.

$3700 is not bad considering a dealership would charge you more than $8000.

If you trust the mechanic, I say go for it. As for the parts, see what he's going to use to replace them with, and then you can decide if you want to get the parts yourself or not.

I was in pretty much the same situation, I pulled the engine, stripped it and took it to the mechanic who then said that I blew and apex seal and gouged my housing and rotor and that the other ones were also worn beyond spec. He also said it looked like it had been rebuilt before (engine has 77K on it according to the dash). Since I do AutoX I got all new parts from MazdaComp, ran me $4300. Then I had him port it and do water jacket mods and put it back together. Labor was $2800 total. Now I need to find the money and I can pick my engine up.
