Q&a

I am in the market for a car and a 3rd gen RX7 is a possibility. I am having a hard time finding a nice one nearby with the options I want.
I was wondering what the differences are between models. I have heard that there is a touring model with leather but with less performance oriented suspension and also less efficient cooling. Could you please explain which different models are available and what the differences are? This has probably been explained a thousand times, so if there is a link to a site I could get this info, please put it up. Thanks.

That took 5 seconds to find. Since you are new, I'll go easy on you, but try to make use of the search button in the top right from now on thanks.

Thanks. I think I want a touring model. I am not a hardcore racer although I autocross for fun, so the flexy roof isn't going to hurt anything. I also don't think <80lbs is going to hurt a car with 255HP or more. My last 3 cars have had moonroofs, so it would be hard to live without one. LOL. But these cars are hard to find, so I will take what I can get. Thanks again.

That's the right attitude... You'll probably end up modifying the suspension to whatever version you get, so it won't really matter if it's not an R1/R2. Not too many people add in the extra oil cooler due to the cost of it. They usually spend the money on something else.

As far as the weakened or flexy roof, I have a hard time believing that it's makes that much of a difference (on an FD that is). If people are that worried about it, they need to install a rollcage.

Yeah, I would end up doing coilovers or at least a spring/shock combo. The only thing I would worry about is the oil cooler. I know about the rotory and heat issues, so how necessary is an extra oil cooler? Why is it expensive to add one? Is it harder than just plumbing in your average oil cooler, or is there some weird circumstance?

Is it necessary, no. If you do any autocrossing, is it a good idea, yes. Oil coolers in general are expensive so prepare to spend the better part of a thousand dollars.

Unfortunately Mustang parts and RX7 parts don't fall into the same price category. Expect to pay on the order of triple or more for anything RX7, relative to a Mustang.

To be honest wit you most people have found that you dont need the extra oil cooler.. And if you do get one.. Get it off a R1/R2 b/c those have been found to be more effective than anything aftermarket you can buy..
