DAMN...REALLY sorry to hear about that. I saw your car at rotorfest and your engine bay was CLEAN. The whole car looked real good, but the engine bay really set it off. Hope you can get another and be back up and running real soon. let me know if you need any little parts, have a whole shed full. Best of luck to you

your not alone with the fire extinguisher problem, seems like ive read a few posts this week from this forum and others about them going bad. sounds like a class action lawsuit to me.
man i know words cant stop that ill feeling but hey, your ok and thats all that matters. think of it as a new begining, a fresh start, take all the knowledge youve gained from owning your FD and put it into something new. that way the spirit of your beloved RX7 will never die.

Thank you all for the kind words and condolences, that makes me feel better.
To answer some of your questions,
charlies7
I'm ok as far as being hurt, I did suffer some minor hand and arm burns, although that's the least of my pain right now.
Mr rx-7 tt
The new fuel lines were of high pressure FI type from summit racing, each one had double clamps on each end.
amp
It was around 2pm, more and less, I was on NB I-95 by GunHill Rd Exit near Co-op City.
Emerald99
The f. ext. was a Kiddie, the 15 bux one that home depot sells, if that **** worked as it should, the car would have been saved for sure, the fire was quiet small when I opened the hood.
areXseven
It's hard to know for sure but my guess goes to fuel line either comming of or bursting, cousing a quiet loud pop under the hood folowed by instant fire and alotta black smoke, at the same time the motor shut down, and btw completely lost brakes, exept for e-brake which helped me slow down and stop safely.
I hope non of you ever experience such scenario, it's very painfull, I'm crushed, seeing it burn right before my eyes and you can't do nothing to prevent it.

Hey John,
I don't think we ever met before but I have really admired the pics of you car. I'm really really sorry to see what happened to your car.
I honestly know what you going through because I did as well. Rx794 posted a link a few posts up, that was my car that also caught on fire. As you, my fire extuingisher failed and did not have the full coverage insurance.
I feel that things happen for a reason, not just randomly. After the fire my wife told me that maybe something worse could have happened to me to look at the bright side and I did.
For what it's worth, I was able to salvage my turbo kit and engine and tranny. The engine will need a rebuild but the tranny was perfectly fine. The clutch setup was also perfect.
Sorry again for the loss,
Anthony

my sympathies to you !!!
i know how it feels when faith decide to take the thing you love the most
(a ******* rammed my 240sx/Skyline R33 swapped, the engine moved back from 1 foot, and just like you i just finished a near perfect setup at 16psi, 400hp)
but then again, it happened for a "better" reason ... since then ive fall in love with the rotaries ....
so i just hope that ur love for rotaries will still be as strong as it is, or even more !!!
but like everyone said , at least ur ok ... u couldve get burned really bad when playing in the fire with ur jacket !!
anyways, best of luck with a new FD ...

SayNoToPistons
God willing another FD will be my next sports car again, I can't see myself without a rotary.
got_boost
Huhh, before my FD I to had a 300ZX that my ex totaled right after doing complete exhaust, new whels, tires. etc... but the good thing of loosing the Z was that I got my FD which I loved way better.
But now what, I don't think I can get something to love more than my FD or another one to replace it.
Touge Monster
Kiddie, Home Cheapo piece of sh*t...
Turbo II-FB
I was actualy thinking to sue them *****'s but everything seems like it was meant to be and just gonna let it go with honor, save some $$ hopefully and get a cheap project FD and build it from the ground up, God willing...

Yep, another member had a non-working fire extinguisher from Home Depot.
The very least, both of you should swap stories and see if there is any common thread, more than just purchased from Home Depot.
Could be a windfall for both of you . . .
Glad to hear you're physically ok.
:-) neil

Gosh, this is tragic. I'm really sorry. This was one of the most incredible cars on the forum. A great loss for us all.
This is one of those instances where you've got to look beyond the issue of the fire extinguisher. Yes, they are supposed to work. I guess we need to test them once in a while.
But then, if you take the position of the NTSB, you've got to look at what really caused this disaster.
My gut tells me to look at the components involved. Looking at the garage info you posted, I find the following fuel system:
OBX Adjustable Fuel Pressure Regulator,
255 LPH Walbro Fuel Pump.
2 Stage Custom Made h2o/Alc. Injection System.
A'pexi Power FC Fuel/Engine Management,
FC Commander.
Yes, it is possible there was a problem with the installation of the fuel lines, but in this case, I'd doubt it. Is there anything here that could have caused a build up of pressure that caused the lines to split or pop off? Those are pretty good fuel lines. I'm wondering if maybe something between the Walbro and the engine could have malfunctioned. Or maybe the control system? While it is always possible, I doubt the problem was with installation. I'd look at equipment function.
Best thing for the rest of us to do is look at what may have happened here, then learn from it. Look at our own cars and see what can be done to prevent the next RX from going up in flame. Anyone have any ideas?
