I found a bone stock 93 blk/tan touring with 43,000 original miles with no modifications. Nothing has been done to this car for as reliability or performance, The owner wants 16500 for the car. Is this a reasonalble price? Also in this part of the country there are no performance shops to have a compression test done. Would it be SMART to buy this car for this price without the test?
help

You should be able to have a compression check done at a local Mazda dealer.

take it to the local mazda dealership for a comp. test. they shouldnt be able to mess that up. i personally wouldnt give $16500 for it, But is isnt uncommon for them to sell for that much.

If the engine is in good condition I think that $16,500 is reasonable. I bought my 7 without a compression test. I would have liked to have had it done though.

i believe properly running rx7s, modded or not should not be sold for under 16,500. let us 7 owners push up the market on these babies.

scratchjunkie, I hope you're kidding. Yes, they are great cars, but they are 10 years old and given the average reliability of the engine, just not worth that much.

i agree!

also, have you test driven the car? as long as it throws you back in your seat at 3k, and then agian and even more at 4k then it should be fine. i bought mine w/ 17,000 miles. with the car sitting for so long, compression was 1 of my main concerns, and the compression has barely droped. carbon buildup will cause problems with compression.

yeah

Thats right.
I love 7's, but a 10 yr old car with no reliability mods. is considered a "time bomb". I want to keep the value of the car up also, but 16500 is alot of money. Finanical institutions will only lend around 12-13,000 for a 1993 rx7.
Just wanted to get a feel of what other people thought about the price.

I think the FD engine is just as reliable as the Driver behind it's steering wheel. Driver/owner ignorance is the No.1 FD engine killer.

i only paid $12500 for mine. it had brand new turbos but it needed a new engine. so i think that $16500 is a little high. I would try talking him down. if he really needs to sell it he will let it go cheaper.

jermelle: Why is a 10 year old RX-7 with no reliability mods a "time bomb"? Most FDs that have high miles on the original motors are relatively stock and have been well cared for. What you should really consider is how the previous owner drove and maintained the car. Has the car been maintained regularly and are all receipts and documentation in order? Has the car been raced or tracked at all? Is the previous owner some kid or is he/she older and mature? How does the car look? A car's physical condition is generally a good barometer of its mechanical condition as well. If the previously mentioned checks out and assuming the engine has good compression and has a clean CarFax report, I don't consider $16.5K out of line. This, IMO of course.

Ok then, list his options UNDER $20k that gives him:
0-60 in 4.9s
1/4 between 13.5-13.9
Can pull .95 to almost 1g at the track using TINY 225 tires.
Tops out at 160mph give or take a few miles.
LOOKS as good as an FD
FEELS as good as an FD.

There's this little thing called negotiating which is generally considered to be part of the car buying process. The seller has an asking price, the buyer offers to pay something significantly less, and they meet in the middle. I suggest you engage in this age-old art of making a deal with the seller.

In my zip code in excellent condition with leather, this car has a Private Party Value of $14775. You might want to plug in your parameters for a more accurate estimate.

Print out the results and use them as as a haggling tool.

$16500 doesn't sound unreasonable to me, FWIW.

a nice unmolested car like that is good b/c you don't need to worry about crappy mods and bad tuning that negatively affect the car.

definitely try and talk him down. if you are patient and wait, you can probably find some good stuff for less. not many people buying sports cars this time of year.
