Learn from your mistakes, prevent future headache:

First off, it's good that you didn't get hurt. The next most important thing is to learn to drive well, in order to avoid a mistake like this in the future.

1. There's a saying: the best thing you can do to any car is "fix the nut behind the wheel." The most important part (and most difficult for many people): learn good judgement / self control. This is something that can't really be taught, you've just got to do it yourself. Decide to be smarter about stuff like this next time. Most people have to learn this the hard way, I think everyone on these boards will agree.

2. Don't drive as if the streets are your personal racetrack. When you spin, you'll hit a curb / guardrail / tree / cliff / ravine.

3. Young people are statistically proven to be very likely to learn this type of lesson first-hand. It's called inexperience, and although it can be found in older drivers, it's very prevalent in young drivers. The FD3S is not a forgiving car. Teens shouldn't drive it. End of story.

Think of it this way: remember how bad a driver you were two or three years ago? You'll be that much better in another two or three years, but only if you choose to learn from your mistakes. I recommend "Going Faster! Race Driving Techniques" by Skip Barber , "Drive to Win" by Carroll Shelby, and I'm sure Bob Bondurant has written a book although I can't recall the name. www.turnfast.com was a great website for driving technique, here's an archive: http://web.archive.org/web/200312260....turnfast.com/

My personal advice to anyone replacing a wrecked FD: buy a rear-wheel-drive non-turbo car. Less than 200hp. Get some good tires and new shocks. Don't do any power mods. Learn to drive it like a pro; prove yourself at the race track. Then save up and buy an FD in 2-3 years when you're ready. Karma's a bitch; if you don't improve yourself, the wreck will be worse next time.

There's a very valid reason why people under the age of 25 pay out of the *** for insurance, especially on high performance cars

rule number one...fd's suck in rain and snow. you should have known better.

man...what a tragedy for such a nice car....luckily no one was hurt...but its obvious you arent ready for this car.

ill put my bets down that you probably wont wreck the next one....blowing it up is on the list within four months though. enjoy.

Not sure if this has been said already...(I didn't read all the pages) I was skimming through and saw this post and I think I should say something.

A 300zx tt or n/a is not a car for this kid. Ive driven both and Ive had a FB and 2 FC (n/a & T2), Ive also driven other rwd cars ranging from stock to HIGH hp. As others have stated jumping into a car such as the FD is not to be taken lightly. Ive been driving now for damn near 15 yrs (damn that makes me sound old) and Im by far NO expert.
But to my original point, the 300zx is a very tail happy car, that back end will kick out at the blink of an eye.
Before rushing out and buying another one use a portion of the money to buy a FB or a FC and learn and practice on that and progress your way into it. I actually loved my FB, that car taught me alot. Again just like the majority of people here Im not trying to bash but just trying to pass on some experience. Good luck to you.

Damn...you guys are hard core. Im sure none of you ever spun out in the rain trying to get sideways.....lol

And just as A note....I dont consider myself some great driver or anything. But ive owned some high hp RWD cars and the FD still gets away from me. These cars are brutal. But, **** happens, even to the best of us. Its not like he got drunk and ran into a mother and child for christs sake, he wrecked a beautiful car, and hes gotta live with that. Punishment enough....Live and learn...lol

I have an FB and an FD, and I try to keep the FD going straight as much as possible. I've still got a ways to go before I know how to handle her at more than 7/10s her ability. As for the FB, I try and send her sideways and send the rear out as MUCH as is possible lol. Every turn, every curve, you name it. It's an excellent car to learn in, but you still gotta remember that it's RWD, so you go past your and the car's limits, and you WILL end up facing the other direction. Thankfully, the FB is a great way to learn.

NEVER. You know why? When it rains, I drive like I'm walking on a pond covered in a thin layer of ice. I'm not taking my chances. I dunno why on EARTH someone would actually want to try and make any car go sideways in the rain, unless they were in a huge empty parking lot w/o any lightpoles to take out... I honestly believe you guys who keep on hyping up your ability to drive in the rain and snow just aren't realizing how LITTLE control you have of the car. Just cuz nothing's happened yet doesn't mean everything's straight. Bottom line is you have less traction when it's wet, which makes for dangerous road conditions - be it an FD or an AWD SUV. After all, they both use tires to touch the same pavement...

And if you insist on saying youve never done it then congrats, you are the most responsible driver ever and someone should give you a cookie.

Obviously this kid got carried away in doing what he did, and he probly would be better off with a tamer car, but **** happens. You guys make it sound like he killed 3 innocent kids or something. He made a stupid mistake and is paying the concequences(sp?). Everyone needs to chill out....you sound like a lynch mob...lol

Low hp rwd cars (2nd gen n/a's) are a ton of fun to get sideways in the rain. Just got to do it in an area when you control the majority of variables.

I totally understand what you mean, but I just don't do that in the rain...ever. I've hydroplaned before and had cars skid and slide before when I was driving NORMALLY because of the rain, so when it comes to kidding around, I just don't do it in the rain. Too much of a liability in my eyes. But then again, cars to me aren't just objects. I have an obsession, so I'm VERY careful about what potential dangers I allow my cars to face

And if you insist on saying youve never done it then congrats, you are the most responsible driver ever and someone should give you a cookie.
I am not, and by a long shot. I'm probably one of the most aggressive drivers you've ever seen, and can't seem to keep the speedo under 65 lol

thats more than messed up. Thats F***ed up. We need to have people go to scca events or autocrossing. just so they know how to control the car that they bought!

i think theres like less than 5000 FD's left on the road?

correct, driving a rwd pickup in the snow is more difficult. i'd say its probably one of the best ways to educate yourself on the knowledge of how to handle rwd on slippery surfaces. you can lose it alot faster in a truck, specially if you dont ave anything in the bed to weight the rear.

I have only spun once and that was on a racetrack when my MAP sensor decided to disconnect itself right at midcorner under controlled 4wheel drift to the corner exit. It surprised me so much I was too slow to counteract and I spun. No drama, no damage

Drifters spin all the time and yet they are one of the best drivers. You never know the line if you dont cross it gently from time to time

And Ceipherz... nicely put!

Wow, that is so sad to see- you should have sold me the car! I'm looking for a white one to add to my family! I'm glad the guy was okay though.

You CAN have that kind of damage in a 40mph impact with a stationary object. My first Legend Coupe was totalled when I was basically pushed off the road and hit a huge tree at 45mph on the drivers side. I don't have digital pictures of my car totalled, but that was a larger car and the damage was significantly more severe.

Wow, I see 2 in your sig... how many are you trying to collect? I had thought about trying to find another to leave completely stock, but with the return of Mazda to Le Mans racing, I think I'll hold off to see what new items will roll off the production lines... (hint hint, 4th gen rotary)
