oil starvation common?

today i was turning right hard, about 50mph
in third gear,
on a banked freeway on-ramp.

the stock oil preassure gauge went up to 120
the red light on the gauge then came on for a second.
i let go of the gas, the gauge still stayed near 120
and slowly went down to 60 after crusing on the highway
this light has never come on before except when the turbos were bad a few years ago.

this happened to me as well on my old engine before it blew, I'm wondering as well if there is a link between these events.

Oil starvation is VERY common during track driving, which is one reason why you need to be sure that you have your oil level checked and where it needs to be all the time.

There are a number of things you can do, but the side effect of having full oil means that you might blow oil through the turbos after it spews out of the fillpipe, which is the key reason for having a catch-can in place to prevent that.

There are some projects that are in the design phase that are being made expressly to prevent this oil starvation, as well as to increase capacity and oil life, but I won't comment on those since they're not my projects (directly...I'll probably help brainstorm).

Anyway, just make sure your oil level is toward the top of the hashmarks

the light (oil level) don't usually come on, since the level sender is located inside a small camber in the oil pan. I can see if long sweeping high G corner "might" cause it to come on, but very unlikely on a highway ramp.

Oil pressure is regulated by the oil pressure regulator... unless there is a restriction somewhere, or a clogged oil passage, the oil pressure should not shoot up higher than normal.

well heres what i found out.
it was about time for my oil change and the oil level
was pretty low, it was a notch or so under the bottom mark.

also the gauge sensor is the wire on the driverside of the oil pan? mine is pretty dirty. it seems i have a small power steering hose leak on it. another thing to do.

dude, gotta check your oil more often! I check mine about every 2-3 times i drive the car, unless i find a reason to do it more often.

that explains why the light comes on for oil level warning.

still doesn't explain why your oil pressure went sky rocket~
you should check and see if there is dirt or somekind of debri plugging up the oil pressure release, or somewhere in the oil system might be clogged up.

I do believe that's the theory behind the dry sump technology, but I'm no expert...I'll try and dig up some info...everyone else, if you have links on this, pls post!

you can read about dry sump on morosso's web site. they are custom build only and appear very expensive. so it would really be track car only.
