Do the math and you'll find it pretty much dead-on (0.622:1, 1km is 0.625 miles). Again, no need to reinvent the wheel when a little math and artwork can do the job.

Mazda typically does NOT reinvent the wheel, so I highly doubt that the sensor is different between regions on otherwise identical vehicles. The gauge face is just different graphically to accommodate the preferred units for that region, but the calibration remains the same if one does the math to convert the units. Kg/cm2 for Japan/Europe, PSI for US/Canada, etc. A notable example of this is the Speedometer. The "universal" standard for most Japanese cars is 1024 pulses/mile and 637 pulses/km. For vehicles with a cable-driven speedometer like the FC, it's 1024 revolutions per Mile and 637 revolutions per Kilometer.
