Question oil pressure?

I have a stock 93 touring and i was wondering what my oil pressure gauge is supposed to do and is there any way i could monitor boost by this?. When at low rpm 2,000 or 2,500 it reads almost zero and at wot it jumps to about 60??? any help would be appreciated. also when shifting into first and 3rd i seem to be getting alot of resistance getting it in gear?

you can't monitor boost with the oil pressure guage. you'll need to buy a boost gauge for that and it's pretty easy to install if you are a little mechanically inclined (which i'm not but that's another story). at first i was all concerned about the oil pressure too but i just ignore it these days...the oil pressure will vary depending on the driving, just i just don't really pay attention to it anymore. from what i know shifting into gears in our cars is a little notchy, especially when cold. mine is hard to get into year as well when it's cold, a lot easier after warms up. is there grinding?

You need a new oil pressure sending unit. It is about $55 from Mazdacomp. Oil pressure has nothing to do with boost.

ttb, shifting smoothness has NOTHING to do with the oil pressure gauge.

huh? did i say it had anything to do with the oil pressure gauge? i said that my shifts are notchy/rough/hard when the car is cold...after you start driving and things get warmed up it loosens up...

Do not try and monitor boost through oil pressure. If you are worried about boost, get a boost gauge. Autometer, Blitz, Nur-Spec ... just a couple of manufacturers that you can look for. If you have funky oil pressure readings, turbojeff is right ... replace the oil pressure sending unit. FWIW, my oil pressure is above 60psi when cold and, after warm up, idles at 30psi. Pops up to 60+ under full throttle. If the engine gets hot (like in the middle of the Texas summer), the pressure will only get to ~45psi under full throttle.

if it's hard to shift into 1st... pump the accelarator then throw.

I don't know about you guys, but crusing on the HWY I'm at about 60psi. Under WOT I'm about 100 psi. When it's cold and I start her up I get about 120 and drops to about 40 psi after returning to idle.
