Oil consumption....how much?
Your car WILL burn oil. Period. That is, if the oil metering system is functioning. Oil is injected into the combustion chamber to lubricate the seals. Search the forum for a more detailed explanation.
Now, how much consumption is normal.
Oil metering system is about 400 parts gas to 1 part oil.
1 gallon = 4 quarts
So, you use 0.01 quarts of oil/gallon of gas. Or another way of looking at it, you use 1 quart of oil/100 gallons of gas.
Assume 17mpg. (100 gallons of gas)*(17mpg)=
1700 miles.

How much is bad?
I needed to add 2 full quarts between my last oil change (2500 miles)... That's a quart per 1250 miles. My car just surpassed 85k miles and has no oil leaks nor is there any oil in the coolant. My car does smoke an awful lot on the first start each morning (especially if it's cold), and the smoke has a bluish tinge to it telling me that it's incompletely burning some fuel and oil. After that first start, no other smoking issues for the rest of the day, even if I don't drive the car for the rest of the day (8-10 hours) and it's below freezing out. My question is how much oil consumption is considered normal? Is my car eating too much oil? This is my second FD, the first ate 1/2 quart every 2500 miles...
For the record, mine's burning about a quart / 3000 miles. I get a little blue smoke on cold mornings, and a little at the end of the day. Hard to tell how much of it's oil vs just fuel, but I don't think it's much oil at all because it dissapates fairly quickly.
