I thought that FC housings had a different coating on the inside surface than the FD which is why FDs don't have to inject as much oil as FCs... Either way, a nickel... that is ridiculous.

Yes, the FD housing coating was slightly improved, BUT as history has shown the FD housings wear just as much or even more than the 89-91 FC housings so I would not worry about that. Especially these days with cars being modded and engines being blown in <50k miles.

The OP knew it was a 2nd gen. housing with water ports that would need to be plugged. Apparently it's been driven for some time with the coolant leak, whose source apparently wasn't a big deal. Also, apparently until recently, a proper size frost plug wasn't available and it was common practice to epoxy the hole shut. I doubt it was the quarter that failed. Seems everyone is more upset about the coin being used, but it's likely the epoxy that's leaking......yet that's an accepted way plug the hole. The shop should be responsible for fixing the leak if the housing is still worth keeping for the next rebuild. Nothing more.
Freeze plugs aren't the way to do it either. I've had experience plugging a hole in a TII housing and the hole was not round or consistent along it's length. Horrible place for a freeze plug. People really should drill and tap them to NPT... or just buy the right housing.

i know you could use Quarters to plug up the ports. Its just the matter on sealing it up good, very good.. I'm very disappointed that TNR did a sloppy job like that. Dont take me wrong, I really dont kow how much you pay for your rebuild but if you paid for a cheap rebuild then you got what you got, but if you paid a big amount of money. Over 3g's then yea that is a f**k up job there and both you and the shop should come to a agreement that both of you guys pay half on the job.... That my saying. Not picking a side.. Sorry to hear for a B.S. job... Good Luck

My point in all of this is simple. If a buddy did this for you, and it failed, so be it. A business owner should know better. Plugging a hole with a quarter and silicone in any engine is half-assed, plain and simple. Had the company explained what they intended to do, and the potential risks involved, this may be a different story. But as the OP stated, they did not do that.

I can understand that there may not have been an ideal way to properly seal those coolant passages at the time the engine was built, but it's the company's responsibility to make sure that the customer understands that. Think about it. If your engine builder said they were going to seal some holes in your engine with quarters and silicone, would you pay them to do it?

I certainly would not.

I just swaped LIM on my rebulid from TNR and found the exact same thing, only now epoxy only some sillicone and a quarter. They bought new housings for my engien but never told me they used TII housings. And that ended up being a 5k rebuild i dec 2005.

Since they didnt tell you, I would ask for the price difference between the fc and fd housings back atleast. I cant believe the shop just wouldnt tell you. Risking business over a couple dollars is just ridiculous. I dont know how more shops dont see the bigger picture.
