damn i just bought a car which this happens too, well the shift know actually vibrates when going slow and the exhaust is vibrating the most. i just took the chance that it might be engine mounts, after searching it does sound normal. I think it can be fixed with new rubber mounts...or so ive been told.
I havent actually picked my car up from the sale yard yet but when i do this is the first thing i want fixed. It makes a sound rattling, quiet but could get really annoying.

Anybody else out there that can verify that this is a normal thing? I've driven plenty of cars in my life and never expreienced this kind of flex before.

He means just that it's not normal for a correctly maintained FD. With that much movement it should be looked at to determine if any or all of the isolation mounts checked for failure (they don't wear out they fail) which is what allows the excessive movement in the first place. Is it a normal failure piece, "Yes" do they need replacing, if there bad. Since US cars are no less than 12 yrs old I would suspect most to be in need of replacement if neglected.

Yes, a little bit of movement is normal. But nowhere near enough movement to make the shift **** lift up.

As Dave said, it may be normal for the typical poorly maintained FD but it is certainly not "normal".
It doesn't mean that the car is necessarily a bad buy, just something to be aware of. Although the fact that the current owner hasn't fixed it may be an indicator of poor maintenance in general.
