Yep, thats normal... to an extent. Your engine and tranny mounts are loose/worn.

damn i just bought a car which this happens too, well the shift know actually vibrates when going slow and the exhaust is vibrating the most. i just took the chance that it might be engine mounts, after searching it does sound normal. I think it can be fixed with new rubber mounts...or so ive been told.

I havent actually picked my car up from the sale yard yet but when i do this is the first thing i want fixed. It makes a sound rattling, quiet but could get really annoying.

Anybody else out there that can verify that this is a normal thing? I've driven plenty of cars in my life and never expreienced this kind of flex before.

depends on what you are looking for by normal:
normal for worn engine mounts, yes.
normal for a perfectly new condition FD, no.

Noltec makes a good set of engine mounts.

I have never had a manual vehicles not have "some" movement. but excessive movement just means that something is worn.

He means just that it's not normal for a correctly maintained FD. With that much movement it should be looked at to determine if any or all of the isolation mounts checked for failure (they don't wear out they fail) which is what allows the excessive movement in the first place. Is it a normal failure piece, "Yes" do they need replacing, if there bad. Since US cars are no less than 12 yrs old I would suspect most to be in need of replacement if neglected.

Typical items that affect this are:
- worn motor mounts which allow engine to move around a lot.
- worn differential bushings which allow drivetrain to move around.

It means it's not normal and you should have the engine mounts, PPF, and diff mount bushings checked. Those are the major common points of failure that will lead to this problem.

Yes, a little bit of movement is normal. But nowhere near enough movement to make the shift **** lift up.

As Dave said, it may be normal for the typical poorly maintained FD but it is certainly not "normal".

It doesn't mean that the car is necessarily a bad buy, just something to be aware of. Although the fact that the current owner hasn't fixed it may be an indicator of poor maintenance in general.
