New Clutch, Reverse Grinds

Thanks for everybody who has been involved in my clutch project this weekend. Just one lingering issue: Putting the transmission in reverse grinds like a son-of-a-bitch. Doesn't matter how long I hold the clutch pedal down before shifting, but SOMETIMES, not always, if i rev the engine before shifting, it goes in smoothly. I don't want to grind it too much, because...well....that's bad. So, please give me some thoughts.

You might not have enough travel in your pressure plate. Does it only grind in reverse?

Yes, only reverse. How would I adjust the pressure plate travel? Though...that would make it grind in every gear, I'd presume....

Keep bleeding the clutch. When I replaced my clutch, we used a PowerBleeder to get the job done.

Yes, it should do it in every gear if the pressure plate wasn't giving enough clearance (which is why I asked if it was only reverse).

If it's only one gear, it doesn't seem like a clutch problem. You didn't retension any of the other bolts on the tranny did you?

Anytime I had grinding in reverse issues, it is due to the gears spinning a little, and then your just jamming it into reverse. Try putting the car in 4th gear, and then going into reverse. Just a thought.

I didn't touch a damn thing on the tranny, and I bled the clutch like you wouldn't believe (Motive Power Bleeder) since I installed a new line. I'll try the 4th gear thing tonight, but that's going to be annoying when parallel parking, if that's my solution...

Check this thread:

as that's why I asked about any other bolts on the tranny. You might just need to drive it a little bit to get it broken in. Mine was a little rough for the first few hundred miles or so (not grinding or anything though).

Wow, no, that's not my problem....but definitely a good read. I'm thinking synchro right now, since it grinds as i'm going INTO gear, but is fine once i'm in gear. Also the occasional non-grinding shift when revving tells me something too.... but maybe it all just needs to be broken in, what do I know.

Aren't the 5th & Reverse synchro the same? 5th is fine...
