need your opinion

hey, i need some opinions on whether i should consider this rx7 or not. my friend has a 1993 rx7 -2 turbos, automatic, black exterior, red leather interior, cat back exhaust, has lots of upgrades to engine but engine is blown so i would be getting a new one probably from pettit racing. the car is in great shape with the exception of the engine, it could be fixed but it would be best to get a new one. he is asking around 8 grand. i am only 15 and this would be my first car. i just wanna know from you rx7 owners if i should jump on this or not. please help, thanx.

the ripe age of fifteen

Instead of a new engine, you should make it into a statue for the front of your yard. That way you don't have to modify it or LEARN HOW TO DRIVE with a 3rd gen RX7!

I would love to have an RX7 exhibit for my parents yard. My dogs would probably pee all over it but oh well. There are disadvantages to everything. You know?

But hey if the statue thing doesn't work out then I think Pettit is a good engine builder, I like my IC from them. He will make you a fine engine since this IS THE FIRST CAR YOU ARE GOING TO OWN!

It beats the hell out of my first car, which was a Geo Prism. I hope to god your turbos have a secondary boost problem SINCE YOU ARE 15! and this is the car you will be ragging out for the first time in your life. Hello stray telephone polls and random trees, bye bye 7.

I'll be damned...15...

YDOC...NO, you should NOT buy this car. It will end up in the graveyard with many of them lately.

Try getting something a bit more normal for a first car.

it's real simple man...it's too much car for you. Don't take it so personal, and on the other side don't think you can handle any car. You'll be learning your future of driving on this car, and in that time guys like to try dumb stuff and enjoy the new freedom. THis car my friend, automatic or not, isn't that car to do it on. One wrong mistake and it won't be forgiving like other normal beaters/first cars...you'll be wrapped around a pole or tree in a very light car.

Not to mention on top of all that, if this will be your car to drive all the time, new motor or not maintenance is a bitch and expensive.

It's your decision, in the end. Here's what to expect if you get it:
1. The engine will cost you at least $3000, probably more like $5000+ installed.
2. It will attract females like mad (and make other males jealous). Or vice versa if you're female ;-).
3. You will have difficulty learning to drive it - it is very powerful (yes, even the automatic), and you will be able to get yourself in very deep (trouble, I'm talking about).
4. Insurance will likely cost you almost as much as the engine (per year!).
5. Unless you are somewhat mechanically inclined, you will be forming a close relationship with a good mechanic, as most "true" sports cars are maintenance intensive - they tend to "push the envelope" and so require constant care.

For these reasons (and others), a 3rd gen is not really suitable as a first car. A first gen. (up to 1985) or even a second gen. (up to 1991) would be great. They are still classed as sports cars, so insurance will still be outragous.
For a first car, your best bet is a four door sedan or a pickup. Low maintenance, and much more reasonable insurance.
As I said, your choise.

it's yoru money and your time, but i'd say no. Liek they said, unles you've been driving a while, don't get it. With the amount of power it has you'll just end up hurting yourself or someone else, unless you are a very careful driver, which face it, isn't possible in a FD ;P
