make the insurance company pay high retail book. Obviously you have pictures to prove that your car would fall into that category.

Sorry for your loss, it certainly leaves you with an empty feeling.

Let me tell you a story about alarms. A friend of mine had his car, with a top of the line alarm, stolen 4 times. After the 4th time he installed 2 - 140db sirens INSIDE his car. Along comes Joe Thief and breaks into his car again, the alarm goes off and Joe gets 140db x2. This time he doesn't get away. The cops come and the guys just ignores their instructions...like he can't hear them. Turns out it damaged his hearing. Serves him right you say? Well he turns around and sues my friend and wins. Now my friend is paying him $440/month for disability. Gotta love our justice system.

Not to be a pessimist, but the only thing an alarm does is give the thiefs something else to sell. Any thief worth his salt can get around an alarm as fast as he can a locked door. The exhaust might help, but if it's too loud the neighbors will learn to tune it out or ignore it.

That's seriously messed up! If he's trying to steal your car I think you have the right to do whatever it takes to keep your car, including causing physical damage, I know I'd fight it.

Intersting car alarm story and very unfortunate that your friend is now paying a thief... Ideally I would have appealed the judges descission. I also question the ability of your friend's attorney.

Someone who wanted to steal the TA would be in and driving away in about 2 minutes. Pontiac only used about, I wanna say, 13 different resistances in that system. The two wires can be snipped under the column and an off-the-shelf switchable resistance board can be used to bypass the key in minutes. It really dates back to "hotwiring" a car.

As far as delaying a theft, a hidden cutoff switch is always the best bet.
