Question Is my car running Lean ?

Mods,
intake,DP,MP,CB, ASP IC,Greddy Profec~S, HKS PFC FCON.

Inside the FCON i have a switch numbered 1-9 to adjust the flow of injectors. I just got the IC, and boost controller installed, so i figure i need alittle more fuel.

HKS manuel says

Rich condition

..... Low EGT readings
Black exhaust smoke
Poor response
After Burn thru exhaust
Hesitation or low power
Excessive fuel comsumption

Lean condition

High EGT reading
Audible detonation
Hesitation during the rpm band
Backfire

Well i turned the *** to make it run richer and i get licky notch-breakup towards the upper rpm along with backfire under wot.

So i turn it down a notch it seems better, just backfires when you let off the gas.
But i'm worried i could be running lean, since i add a IC, and turned up the boost.
Boost is 12-15psi. Still trying to tune the profec also.

So making it richer you can have hesatition and backfires as a rich condition also?

You didn't mention which settings you used. I have mine set at 2 or 3 running 13 pounds of boost but I don't have the MP or an IC. I have an EGT so know I'm in the ballpark. My mods are in my sig so you should get a feel for where to start. I'm guessing around 5 or so.

thanks,

I intially, had it set for 3 before the IC running 12lbs of boost,
I have left it at 4 for now, seems ok, but higher rpms feels like it's stuttering slightly, and a backfire under WOT. Still backfart when let off throttle. I'll try 5.When tuning yours, do you turn the **** while driving, or do you shut off the car?

when letting off the gas after getting in it or while you are in it. You will shoot backfire because the fact you are not running any cats. That is why you see somany video clips of rx7's shooting flames. Thier are others but i tend to see more of the 7's than any other.

You should not be running more than 10 psi with the stock ecu -- you are going to hit fuel cut. IMO, it's pretty damn dumb to install old technology like the F-CON and BLINDLY adjust it without having a clue of what you are doing. How are we supposed to know if you are running lean if you don't? The ONLY way to tell is to install a wideband o2 sensor.

My serious advice, and I hope you take it, is to remove the F-CON and midpipe, keep boost at 10 psi until you are properly prepared to go for more power.

I do have FCD also, FCON been doing good for 4 years with 12-14 lbs with the fcon and FCD,and manual boost controller,I know it's not the best, but hasn't failed me, Know i have a Large IC and Profec S,and now i have to adjust it, and it's not easy, the manuel says turn the ****, and observe signs of either lean or rich, that's what i'm trying to do.

You do not adjust AFRs on an FD by observation. As rynberg said, get a wideband.

I usually shut the car down before doing adjustments. The last time I tuned the FCON - I was on a dyno with a wideband hooked up. I was also able to watch my EGT to get a feel for how my AFR related to my EGT. There's been a few instances of me having to adjust the setting at track events because of bad fuel. I have dyno graphs with AFRs filed somewhere of the differences between settings 1, 2 and 3. I'll see if I can find them.

Thanks Svelte7 for the help!

I understand wideband is the only way!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nobody should tune their car with out a wideband. I guarentee that 90% of people use their apexi FC or what ever ecu, and air/fuel guage, which isn't accurate and tune it !, basically using observation. Telling me to use a wideband isn't gonna help me at this point, closes dyno is 4 hours away from what i was told, my fcon is plug and play for tuning, it's been good for years, Just looking for other help other than use a wideband...
