Maintanance?

Hey guys...I just pick up my R1 last week...hence, there're a lot of stuffs that i still need to learn....such as.....
1. What's the best engine oil for 13B??.....
2. Is it correct to rev the engine to 3000 for 10 sec. and let go of the gas before you shut down the engine...or keep it at 3000 and shut it donw?
3. Anything else to keep the car in good cond.?

Thank you !

1. 10w30 (Castrol, Mobil, etc.)
2. If your car is still stock and the AWS is still operational, it will automatically rev to 3k when it's cold and you first start it (can't remember if it's disabled when the car is in gear or neutral). I'm not sure about before you shut down.
3. Look through this post... https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showthread.php?t=68640

Don't rev your car up either when starting it up or shutting it down.

No car likes to start up at high rpm. It's bad for the engine. The reason your RX-7 does this is to warm up the cats quickly for cold start emissions. Screw that. Here's what you do.

Depress clutch.
Put shift in 1st gear.
Keep clutch depressed.
Turn key to start engine. It will go to about 1,500 rpm....it will not go up to about 3,000 rpm.
Move shift to neutral.
Take foot off clutch.
Let oil circulate and engine warm up a bit. 15 seconds or so should do it.
Drive away. Do not exceed 4,000 rpm's until the engine is fully warmed up.

When you're done driving, don't rev up the car before shutting it off. You want to give the turbos a chance to spin down if you've been driving at high revs. If you don't, you could turn the oil in your turbos to a hard substance known as coke. Not good. Letting the car idle for about 30 seconds before shutting it off is a good practice. The turbos spin at such high rpm's it can take a while for them to spin down to a normal "idle" speed.

I always give it a little rev like up to 2k-2.5k RPM's right before I shut the car off. Just tap the gas and when it hits 2.5 turn it off right away, don't hold it there.

Doing this burns off excess fuel coming to the engine and will help to prevent your engine from flooding, especially when it's cold.

I have never experienced a flooded engine, not even when starting it up dead cold and moving it a few feet and killing it. Not even with low compression. Not even when my FPR went bad and it was dumping fuel like crazy.

sDylish: I strongly suggest you spend five minutes reading the owner's manual and learning how to use the forum's search function. Oil has been discussed several dozens of times on this forum over the last few years. Run a search, you can read for days if you like. There is no need to rev up the engine before shutting it off or starting it up.

Its funny that you mentioned that Tyler. There were a couple of times I actually did that too, and from reading up past threads I feared that I'd flooded my engine. Nothing happened. Started right up.

That's why I started always doing it, my friend had flooded out my old FC by moving it a couple feet while it was cold and shutting it off. Took a whole afternoon to get it started. rynberg and tahmid consider yourselves lucky.

I agree that the FD seems less prone to the flooding problem, but I do believe it even mentions in the owners manual (RX7/RX8) to let the engine warm up before shutting it down again. Also, I noticed that Steve Kan does this on all the cars that are in his shop and I trust he knows what he's doing so I got into the habit of it as well.

Your rev-up procedure doesn't hurt the car and it may help to eliminate flooding, so there's certainly nothing wrong with doing it. In my personal experience, it's just not necessary, that's all.

That being said, I don't regularly start it up cold and shut it back off again several times in a row....just an occasional shut-off when cold. Maybe I have been lucky, who knows.

sDylish, congrats on getting the car. Enjoy it and have fun with it, but always make sure to be careful and treat it well, and it'll give you a lot of happiness. And as HDP told you, read up on the newbie sticky and that will give you a lot of general info on these cars. Anything else you need to know is only a search away. Good luck.

Revving the engine to 2-3K and shutting it off is useful if you have a bad coolant seal. The car shouldn't be flooding regularly otherwise.

car looks good, you can copy and paste the IMG tag which is the last line under your pic in photobucket and the picture will show on the tread.

Great looking car. That's extra tint on the windows, right? Those all black cars with the extra tint look super mean.....they're the villain's car in the movies, right? (except for Batman)....so be prepared to be cop-bait.

And the all black makes your nice looking rims stand out, so they're theft bait. I'd at least make sure you have those McGuard wheel locks, or something similar, if don't have some protection already.
