leaky oil pan
my mechanic told me that i have a leaky gasket in the oil pan. he told me that the gasket is around 15 bucks, but it will take upto 4 hours of labor to replace it.
is he right?
if i do it myself, how long will it take me? and what kind of equipment do i need? i have replaced my vacuum hoses before and taken the upper-intake manifold off many times, so i feel comfortable doing it myself.

dont waste your time replace'n it. they really dont leak persay they SEEP out over time I have a new motor with 6000 miles and it seeps but nver touches the ground. best thing to do is clean it, let it dry and get out some acousty seal and smudge it on to see if it helps dont wast your money. if oil is touching the ground then you have a bigger problem than a oil pan I haver never seen them leak on the ground un less it gets banged up pretty bad.

$400 seems right, well depends on their labor rate. I think the book time is around 4-5hrs. If you want to do it yourself you need to take off the engine mounts before you can take off the oil pan. Its a lot easier on a rack than on the floor. The pan is held in with 10mm bolts, lots of them. On a few of the bots near the front you might have troubles getting to them. A universial 10mm 1/4 socket would help, i'm not talking about putting a universial joint on the 10mm, this ones has its own universial joint.

I had my oil pan gasket changed(costed me $450) and it still leaks a bit... its not a big deal... as long as there isn't a lot of oil leaking I wouldn't worry about it.

When you have it done. Normally the car needs to sit without oil for up to 24 hours to let the sealant seals properly.
I think its a good idea to let the mechanic have the car over night after he seals it, and not put oil in, and even run it at all.
