I'm installing a midpipe...

Guys

I'm installing a midpipe. While I'm at it, I'll be installing a Racing Beat exhaust as well.

Here's the thing. The Racing Beat exhaust only comes w/ one set of exhaust gaskets. What about the front of the midpipe?

I was hoping to obtain a 2nd set of Racing Beat exhaust gaskets from a local forum member.

But what IF there isn't one available? What do you guys do?
I looked at the DIY exhaust gaskets at my local Kragen, but it looks rather flimsy (paper that resembled thin corkboard).
I was questioning whether that stuff will be able to withstand the heat from the rotary.

So...what do you guys do to buy/make/modify an exhaust gasket?

Maybe I am missing on part of the reading but can't you just go to Mazda and get one of their gaskets for exhaust make from metal? Think it was like 8 $ last time I went.

Yep, you got it. Just go with the mazda ones. Or if you are really set on the racing beat ones (if you are, why?) im sure you can get them from them directly if you call them up.

The Mazda ones are 2.5" opening, not 3" opening. Any midpipe you buy SHOULD come with two 3" exhaust gaskets.

Most after market RX7 exhausts are 3", the stock Mazda gaskets are 2.5". Just do a google search for 3" exhaust gasket and you will find a lot of places selling them. I pay $6.00 a piece and buy them 10 at a time.

Hope that helps,
Dan

The midpipe is 3" and is a USED midpipe (not new). That is why it didn't come w/ gaskets.

The exhaust is a brand new Racing Beat unit. But of course, they only supply one gasket set for their product.

Also, the Racing Beat gasket looks to be comprised of a paper/composite fiber core, w/ a perforated metal exterior. Any feedback on what material is best to make an exhaust gasket from?

So I guess my options are to find someone locally that has them. Or make one myself?
Do I need to apply any gasket sealant type stuff on? Or is it a simple bolt on affair?

I just bolted mine up with no sealant. I did notice that depending on the size of the bolt holes in your flanges, using heavy duty washers on both sides seals the joint much better. Just a suggestion.

I have tried, with resounding failure, to make my own. The damn turbo rotary EGTs nuke even the highest-end Mr. Gasket exhaust gasket material within 1000 miles. And cutting the good Mr. Gasket ("Ultra") is a pain since it's wire mesh reinforced. The RTVs also nuked quickly. Maybe it was just my car, since I later removed a dripping injector that may have been causing abnormally high EGTs, but even when I had the gasket put in after the stock cat they toasted fast.

It seems to me the standard exhaust gasket (including racing beat) is made of a sandwich of foil and fiberglass. I think the downside is you can't trim them, so it's best for this material to find the best fit for off-the-shelf. I spent some time trying to find another vehicle (truck) with the same 2-bolt/3" pattern, but I gave up and just ordered a few from Racing Beat directly.

Maybe. Even though the bolts were tight, for one reason or another one of my re-used gaskets didn't want to seal completely the last time. I added a little high-temp RTV and it hasn't been an issue since.

Turns out, Importparts.com has Greddy 80mm exhaust gaskets in stock.

http://www.importparts.com/shop/prod...oducts_id=2382

And they are on my drive home. So I'm going to pick this up and see how things work out.
It is cheaper than the Racing Beat gaskets...so I hope it works (I don't see why not).

I'll post what I find out.
