Cool How much it cost to fixed 5th gear syncho ?

I think my 5th gear syncho just went out. When I put it in 5th gear it will pop out to neutral. Do you know how much it would cost for parts and labor ? Thanks.

Doesn't sound like a syncho, usually just harder to get it into gear but will stay in one there. Figure around $60 of parts to do the job if you do it yourself. It's easier then you think. Paying someone, don't know. maybe a 4-5 hr job?

Damm $700 bucks. Just spended $686 for a clutch job last month. I think I am 80% leaning toward selling my car. I am getting too old and broke for this ****.

The synchro and clutch sleeve are less than $75 for parts, but labor is a few hours for a good shop. A shop that's done it before will be more accurate with their labor estimate.

How far are you from Pettit? I understand Cam has it down to a science.

Hmm, that's interesting - I would figure his speed would be a cost savings - but maybe not.

I'll do it for a couple hundred + parts....

there is a guy locally that owns a mazda repair shop, he charges me $65 to do it. Its less than an hours worth of work. That is with me bringing the tranny down.

sk8world had them install a clutch and 5th gear synchro a few years back, and I nearly fell on the floor when he told me the cost...

It's alot cheaper if you can take out your tranny and bring it to a shop.

Mine is bad too, so this might be the route I take... how much would a shop charge to do this?

If you can bring down the tranny, you can change 5th. It's NOT HARD.

In fact, I have a photo writeup coming soon that will make it a little easier.

Outstanding!!!! But aren't special tools required to disassemble it?

I am very interested in your photo writeup, you have a ballpark as to when it will be completed?

Is it just as easy to replace all of them while it is open (syncros)?

I had my 5th gear syncro replaced by mazda. I took the transmission out my self and brought it there, I would have to say they thought it was odd for me to do that, but they only charged me $250 for parts and labor. Unfortunatly, I wish I would of had the others replaced at the same time. I might have to do it again. although I have owned the car since 96 and rebuilt the trans in 98.

Do you need special tools?

A write up would be awesome. But ditto to the above, what special tools and where is the best place to get new syncros?
Thanks
Ben

It's huge because it's very detailed and covers a full gearbox rebuild.

I hope to finish it by the end of the week. It's gonna be 56k unfriendly PDF files.

Use the one that Mahjik is hosting, and there is another out there (by shawnk I think). They aren't quite as detailed, but what you need to know is in there.

It's a good bit more work. You have to disassemble it COMPLETELY to get to the rest of the synchros. Only reverse synchro is 'easy' to get to when doing 5th. My writeup will show you.

Dave
