How does this happen?

Just about done my car last peice to put back the UIM.

Then as I am about to bolt it on I notice this:

Didn't hear any cracking or anything of the sort and was just attaching the ISC and other connections, someone has a Voodoo doll of my car somewhere, problem after problem, maybe it is my old FD foresaking me for having sold it.

I have seen that happen with a few UIM. Not sure what would of caused it? It is kind of good that UIM are not very expensive. 50 bucks in the for sale section. Just gotta swap over the block off valves and everything. Sorry to hear about your luck, i know how it goes. Just when you think things are looking up, something breaks.

Thats the WORST...
I hate being ready to button everything up and then finding a totally random problem.

JB weld??? AHAHAHAHAHA or maybe duct tape????

I hope you were able to source a replacement manifold fairly quickly!

Mechanism of failture - 1) dropped or 2) overtorqued or 3) both.

Yea....JB weld..

here is a problem brought to my attention while I was a bimmer guy - the jb weld is not designed for aluminum. So, it will expand at a different rate than your intake - do you really want the possibility of it spliting again?

I found one semi-locally 40 bucks but still I am perplexed how this occured. I have removed and installed the UIM several times but this I don't know. I use a 1/4 in ratchet to tighten and loosen so unless I am 10 times more muscular than what I hear Rich is (which is far from the case) I don't see how I could over tighten them.

Never dropped it, the place where I was working on it is padded with carpet floor, I just wanted to know that somehow this didn't just happen to me.

Luckily I kept my calm in the heat of the moment I was ready to throw the UIM through the windsheild....

Forgot to say no way I would JB Weld, I don't beleive in bandaids.

i would be williing to bet that the uim was not sitting flush on the lim when u tightented it down. it was probably hung up on the fork type uim mount of the vac rack towards the throttle body. u must make sure that the uim and lim faces are flush before torquing it down, u should be able to screw the bolts all the way on by hand, if u have to use a wrench for the faces to touch something is in the way (probably the fork type uim mount)

its happened to me before aswell

My guess is that a friend, pet, child, or girlfriend/wife knocked it over and sat it back thinking that you'd be none the wiser, not realizing that it was broken.

Don't beat yourself up over it. There could well have been a flaw inside the casting or a crack from something before you that made it prone to breaking.

Installed another one exactly the same way and it did not break. I JDM one so all the stuff under the manifold already did not exist looks nice and clean.

Don't misinterpet my quote "Yea...JB weld" ....it was meant to be sarcastic. I would never trust JB weld on anything like this. The only time I've actually used JB weld is to fill some shift **** holes and tap them out. The stuff is very over-rated.

Do you have an engine torque brace?

Yes Garfinkle ETB. What not bolted onto UIM originally when it broke.

Fits great and I didn't notice any vibrations or extra noise just confident shifting. Go Garfinkle have his oil pan brace too great stuff.

Happens when the manifold is not sitting flush as said above and is torqued down. The casting is pretty weak at the front corner.

just make sure you find all the pieces. If something fell into the intake, could be a bad thing. i'd hate for you to have to crack the motor to find them.
