I just came across this interesting horizontal intercooler,do you guys have any experience w/this unit as far as fitment ,efficiency,hood clearence?It is for a very good price($400)and the buy is tempting,but I'm a little affraid that will run into all kind of problems......

I don't think horizontal IC isn't very effiecent as heat raise up, as for a vertical front mount have all the cool air it can take. Plus it looks sooo cool and gives you a cleaner look at the engine bay

Supposedly, the horizontal intercooler actually works pretty well.

However, they state that you are buying the intercooler only. That means that you will have to have a duct and the piping custom made. Depending on your connections/resources, this could end up costing a LOT of money. Enough to make that $400 not look like such a good deal.

Thanks for your opinions,I think rynbera is right by the time the project is done it could actually cost me same not even more as good vertical IC.
It's hard to find a good one for arround $500,even used....

sr motorsports has not finished that intercooler. well, from what they told me, they never will. there was a problem with demand, and also the fabrication shop that was making it for them......i really like the look of it, but hav esince gone FMIC, so i have no need for that one any more....

you could buy a head of the neck!

Horizontal IC's are pretty nice. Work best with a vented hood, while allowing the radiator to remain in the stock location and achieve optimal cooling.

I like it too but don,t know if I am ready for a project like this..Don't want to get stuck somwhere in the middle of the project.It seems like that without vented hood there would not be enough room and flow

I got mine today. I have access to a machine shop and will fabricate an aluminum insulated duct. I'll keep you posted.

It looks like a well made part.

But than decided for Greddy SMIC instead.Much easier to install,and suficient for my mods.

artowar2: I got the SR 'garage sale' one posted at the top of the thread. If I decide I don't like it as a HMIC, I may move the pipes 90 degrees and use it as a SMIC. I will install it 'as is' with a custom duct and check the temps in and out.

There isn't much to making a duct. Shoot, you could rivet it together if you don't have access to welding equipment.

btytc is right, a complete kit is easier to install. But I like doing the fab work and a good deal. Gives me a Colorado winter project.

I almost got it too untill I read that cooling would start at 30mph. Good for the weather right now but I dont think it can survive the Texas heat. The bad part is that I just met someone who has a welding shop and was going to hook me up with the pipes and the duct.

Yeah, I guess it depends where you are located, in the Sahara or Antarctica...

It seems the stocker or any aftermarket intercooler requires the car is moving (unless you have a fan) and I wonder at what speed they become effective (air starts to flow through the intercooler). I think most (if not all) SMIC are ducted, so the required speed for air flow is the same or similar to the HMIC. Just a guess.

Either way, it should work a lot better than the puny stock one I have right now.

only get a HMIC if u are gettign or have a vented hood. if u are gonna road race the car tehn get a hmic or smic. if u are drag racign or street drivin/racing get a fmic no doubt.

Johncabin,I think you gonna have hell of a time to mount and pipe HMIC as a SMIC,good luck,its just not designed for that,but I am sure you can make it work....

I think the vented hood is only required if there isn't enough clearance on the hood side of the intercooler. SR claims there is, and I think they're probably right.

A vented hood would probably make the HMIC more effective, though (as well as a FMIC and SMIC).

This will be as a last resort if the HMIC doesn't perform as anticipated. This IC isn't that big, so I think it would fit as either HMIC or SMIC.

Cut off the pipes, weld a cover over the hole, cut a new hole, weld the new pipe. No problem.

No, I don't want to make it a SMIC. I hope it works well horizontal as planned. I just see this as a fallback. I will make this fit one way or another, as I own it now.

I guess my point is that $399 is a good deal for a new aluminum intercooler and I have the resources to make it work.

BTW, does anyone actually own the entire SR Motorsports HMIC kit (carbon fiber duct, brackets, pipes, etc)? How do you like it???

John, where will you relocate the fuse box that sits on the front next to the intake? Someone out bid me ont the SMIC I was going for so I think I will get one also like you said Its gonna be better than stock. Pipes will be easy to make and no problem there but what will you use to make the duct?
