Question Hardwireing Radar detector...

Alright so I have a Valentine 1, I've had it for a while now. Im just getting around to wireing it, instead of plugging it into the cigarette lighter. So the question is...what wires did you use to wire it in? I found a ground spot right along the left side of the foot well, and I found a switched power source, but when I turn the ignition on it dosen't come on. So now I would like to know how some of you did it? Could I be using a wire that is to small to splice off of?

thanks

I used a "tap" of the the switched dome light. It was really simple.

You can also use the power from the cigarette lighter. It's what I used to power my boost gauge, and it works fine. There's no power in this car that's particularly easy to get to, so resolve yourself to pulling things apart.

you can probably use the power line to the light in the ashtray/coinholder. i tapped into that one a long time ago to light up my first boost gauge, and it is the easiest to access with the most wire slack to work with in my opinion. plus, there is less stuff to remove (read: less stuff to **** up) in the process of accessing it, and you dont need to strain your neck as much to work in that area, since it is in the most wide open space of our cramped cabins. the only thing that sucks about tapping into a switched power line here (i believe the same goes for the dome light and cig lighter) is that you have to test which wire is positive and which is ground before you tap into them, since they are both not marked, just plain black. i would recommend using the blue "quick tap" thingies that bite into the power wire and splice them into your new wire with one pinch.

after tapping in there, you can just run the wire down under the glovebox area and up the passenger a-pillar, then around the headliner to the mounting area.

Well I already ran a line to the ash tray light for my boost gauge, and I plan on splicing the other 2 gauges to that wire. I don't want to put too much load on that one wire. So I wasn't too sure if I should use that one.

I always resort to the ash tray light.

I used one of my stereo wires. The wires should be long enough to reach from the radio, under the pass. dash, behind the A pillar and up near the visor. This is where I mounted mine, and it is almost completely invinciable when the V1 is not installed

Good luck

heres an esay way to do it:

Just goto your local autozone and get this thing called "add-a-fuse." It pluges into a regular spot for a fuse, and hold 2 fuses. One for the orginal accessory, and one for the new one, then it has a wire coming out for power. I plugged that into my sunroof fuse location, and then just ran the wire up the A-piller, then accorss the backside of the headliner, then find an appropriate ground of coarse.

Alright, thanks everyone for the feed back....but. Since my car has been out for about a month now, and I have been using the battery to listen to music. It was pretty dead. So what had happened was it didn't give the detector any power. I charged it overnight, and tried it this morning and.. It worked! Thanks again.

If you mount your detector high on the windshield, you can run a wire to your sunroof control wire. You won't have any wires running down the pillars. It's a nice clean install, and it won't run your battery with the key off.
