Hardwired Radar Detector

Has anyone attempted to hardwire their radar detector to an ignition switch power source on the dome light? An FD with a moon roof, you can tap into the power from it, but I have an R1 (no moon roof). Is the wiring harness for the moon roof tucked back under the headliner? Thanks in advance.

why not wire it to a switched source in the fuse box.

I DID!!!! I like it much better!
I mounted mine underneath my rearview, ran a wire up to the headliner tucked it under the headliner and ran it over to the pillar.
Ran the wire behind the pillar and under the dash.
I bought an inline fuse holder at an automotive store, connected it to the postive and took an ohmmeter and found a wire that gets power when the ignition was turned on.(I think the cig. lighter will work not sure)
Spliced the two wires together and grounded the negitive.
It works great and pretty well consealed only a wire running down to the radar detector from the headliner is visable.
Hope this helps!

My friend has a 94 Plymoth laser which doesnt have flipup headlights. The talon does, and both share the same gauge cluster. We just went to the junkyard, grabed the switch that flips up the headlights on a talon and wired his detector from a switched source though that switch. Worked great. Junkyard even gave us the switch free

Well, I'm trying to avoid running a long length of wire when I could just tap into a source close to the detector. Oh well.

I spliced a 12v wire coming from my stereo and ran it under the passenger side dash, up the A-pillar

The dome light cover will slide down. I don't know if the wiring for the sunroof will be there or not. If it is there, it is an ideal place to wire your radar detector. That's where I wired mine. You could wire it to one of the dome light wires, but then you would have to remember to turn it off each time.

To remove the dome light cover, use a plastic knife along the sides to help release the little metal spring that holds it up. Just slide it down gently.

The best way is to route it under the headliner, down the a-pillar, and to a switched location in the fuse box, just as SyderJL mentioned. It is real easy, just poke the wire under the head liner, pull the a-pillar and route the wire down. Took me all of 20 minutes in my FD

I believe that most people hardwire their radars so they can be a little more stealthy. This way the cops that are just following you won't see the curly pig tail wrapped around you rearview and decide to molest you for the hell of it. The nice thing about hardwiring in the FD is that most other cars don't have a clue you have a detector on you visor; no cord, and you sit low enough that they can't see the detector on you visor. IMHO, people with there cords showing and the detectors on the dash or low on the windshield are begging to be hassled by the "man". My $.02

I hard wired mine in a few mins.

All I did, was mount the radar detector above my rear view, then ran the wire above the windshield, then down the pillar, then tapped it into my cig lighter. It powers on/off with the car, it's out of the way, and you cant see any wires.

Ill take a pic later maybe.
