Gas smell when accelerating
I have a 93 R1. I smell gas when i'm boosting pretty good, but i don't ever see any gas anywhere at idle or traces of it anywhere when i've looked and gas lines sure don't appear to be leaking. Could this be intake gasket leaking and i smell gas that is mixed in with the boosted air? Or could one of my gas lines be leaking and i don't see it leaking at idle since the pump isn't running at full power? If anybody has had a similar problem, i would appreciate a response.

First jump the FP from the Diag box. Then see if you see anything leaking or smell anything. Second, look at the charcol canister setup, that could be the problem, since it only opens up under acceleration and feeds into the plenum.

A leaky FPD (Fuel Pulsation Dampener) is the most common cause of the famed "fuel smell". If your FPD is stock and your injectors have never been cleaned and balanced, then go ahead and set aside a weekend for a wild adventure in the engine bay.

First off buy a fire extinguisher...
And dont ignore it- there are plenty of pictures of cars that have burnt down from the same thing you are seeing.

Also after you check the fuel system for leaks under pressure. Check the LIM gasket. This is a very common symptom. You will smell gas only under acceleration as the injectors open up and dump fuel. If that is the problem. and you go in to replace the gasket, replace the FPD at the same time.

You are an engine fire and a totaled FD waiting to happen.
Get an extinguisher, and find that leak.

I have also heard stories of cars that didn't have the brake booster recall done having a fuel smell under boost. The check valve fails, and lets gas/air mixture blow into the brake booster.

the grommets that seal the primary fuel block to the engine can fail causing a/f to blow past them under boost. that said it may also be a bad lim gasket as mentioned. i doubt it is the injectors or the frd or anything else because it would smell all the time not under boost. seriously get it squared away before you have a fire sale thread

Call Ray @ Malloy 1-888-533-3400. He has a manifold gasket kit that includes all the gaskets except the 2 turbo to manifold gaskets. those are around 65 bucks for both. The manifold kit is 110-120. And as you said the FPD is around 90. and a vaccum job is a requirment if not already done, especially when you are in that far

I just bought my FD a couple months ago, and it had a fuel smell. But I could smell it when cruising/idling/always when running. I thought it was the FPD, so I got a new one, and replaced all the vacuum hoses and fuel lines while I was at it. No dice. Tore it all apart again, and found out it was one of my primary injectors. So I replaced both of them, got all new gromets for all 4 injectors, and sent them in to RC Engineering to have them cleaned. Car is happy now.
