fuel pump not working

My 93 FD has always been a reliable starting motor. Without any warning or symptoms, it now will not start. The starter turns over but does not even fire at all. I believe the fuel pump has died. The redneck quick check is to turn on the key and listen for the pump running with the gas cap removed. When I do this I don't hear a sound. But.....how noisy is the fuel pump? Has anyone done this and can you hear the pump running? I have a fuel pressure gauge that I can splice into the fuel line, but before I do that would like to know if the redneck method can give me a quick answer. Maybe one of you on the forum can take off the gas cap, turn on the key and see if you can hear the pump running. Thanks.

Jump the fuel pump pin to ground in the diagnostic box and you should hear fuel flow.

OP - The OEM fuel pumps are pretty quiet, but if you're in a quiet garage, you should be able to hear the fuel pump run for the first few seconds after keying on using the "redneck" test you described. Using that test, the pump will only run for a few seconds after key on to prime the fuel system, so you may be missing the sound before it shuts off. Recommend you test again by using the jumper method as ZE Power MX6 suggested - that will keep the pump running while its jumped & keyed on. You can definitely hear an aftermarket pump, like a Walbro 255 or 450, but even those are pretty quiet.

Yep, definitely jumper the fuel pump diagnostic. The diagnostic box under the hood, jumper the F/P and GND pins and turn the key to On, this will run the fuel pump continually.

Has anything changed since the car was last running to now?

DaleClark- Only thing different was the battery was almost dead after sitting for a while without my trickle charger attached. When I fully charged the battery it would not start. I pulled the plugs to see if they were wet and they were bone dry. I'll jump the power wire and see if the pump runs.
