fuel pump

hi all, i just recently aquired a 1985 gsl-se and ive never owned a rotary car before. anyways...does the fuel pump start pumping when you turn the key on or only when your cranking it at first then stays on after you are running. i can only feel the fuel pump "vibrate" when the motor is cranking. cant start it cause its sat for 7 years and the old gas is all varnished but i was wondering if i need a new pump while im fixing the car up.
thanks.

is there some sort of a sensor that keeps it pumping when the motors running?
i will have to examine the pump more right after i crank it...
the thing is that the pump was froze up at first....would move back and fourth when you put current to it and then reversed polarity and so on... but i kinda threw it against the ground and it started to work like it should when you put power to it. so i hooked it up to the car to see if it would work and thats when i noticed it would vibrate when cranking the motor over but there was nothing when you let off of the ignition.

Mine will go ALL DAY with the key in the on position, and I'm fairly sure it's running at full power....

'84-'85 cars had a relay which shuts the fuel pump off if the trailing ignitor is either not working, or the engine is not running. There have been probably hundreds of threads regarding this peculiarity. It's supposedly a safety feature and a way to prevent people from driving their cars without functioning trailing ignition.

fuel pump

If people are hearing their fuel pump come on with the key on a Se. Most of the timeit is a bad AFM. And they will usually experience a starting problem. This will be more evident when it is warmer outside. Usually you will take it for a drive, then let it sit
for say 10-15 minutes then go to restart. It will tend to flood at this time. rx7doctor

Wierd... My car also has a fuel-cut off swich, but as far as I could tell, it was just spliced into the stock fuel pump wiring...

Oh well. My AFM is fine, so I guess the relay was removed...

I'm a little cautious about the fact you had to "throw it at the ground" to make it work, but if it sounds like it's working, it pobably is...

And according to the info from our friends, it seems to be on at the right time...
