flooded + starting fluid?

I was jsut wondering, if ones engine is flooded (mine isn't BTW) can you just use soem starting fluid to start it up? Spray some in the spark plug holes, or maybe just take off the elbow, open up the TB and spray some down there?

It just seems like an easy way to get it started, but I've never seen anyone mention it before.

I think mine was flooded about a month ago..

It just cranked and never catched.. I could smell the gas from my cat back..

Finally, I just let it crank (like for 1-2 minutes) and finally it catched and started..

Very weird.. since, I make sure I start my car at least 1ce every 2 weeks..

But like you said.. I thought it wasn't a problem for FD's.. first time ever..

Because everyone on this forum always recommends ATF.

lol yeah I noticed, but I figured, if starting fluid will work then we could avoid the clouds of smoke associated with ATF.

Any reasons this woudn't work? Because I dont see any.

It's rare but the fluid I used is WD-40.

Spray for 4 seconds into the boost gauge nipple on the UIM. Go crank.

Guaranteed to unflood your car.

Starter fluid will not be very effective. It's just more fuel. What you need to do is -remove- liquid fuel. To do that you need to improve the low RPM (250 or so) pumping action or apex and side seal efficiency. That is done with oil. I recommend 2 stroke oil, but many use ATF as it is very high detergent. They think it will help clean out the chambers, I guess. A tablespoon or so in the boost gauge port seems to be the easiest way to go. WD-40 may work, but it's the wrong kind of oil. It's penetrating oil, and may cause a little extra wear for a moment or two.
I've never flooded mine, but for those who do so often, I guess a spray can of oil would be a good thing

So you held an open flame to gasoline soaked spark plugs? You should get a Darwin Award for that one...
