FD Trim Levels

I've found a little bit of information on this, but is there any surefire way to tell what trim level your FD is? I know the VIN doesn't have specific codes for trim so that's a no go. I've been assuming mine is a Touring based on the fact I have a sunroof, leather and the Bose system but I also have the stock oil coolers.

Is your car a 5-speed? The reason I ask is because the automatics have a cooler where one of the oil cooler from an R1/R2 sits. Maybe it fooled you into thinking you have 2 oil coolers. You wouldn't be the 1st to ge fooled because they look a lot alike.

Everything else sounds like Touring. In '94 ('95?) they did away with Touring and introduced the PEP or Popular Equipment Package, which was basically a touring, but (I may be wrong) I think you could option in the dual oil coolers on a PEP and get rid of the sunroof and leather.

But if your car is a 93 from America with bose, sunroof and leather, you definitely have a Touring model.

Mine is a 93' and it's a 5 speed. That's why I'm so confused by the oil coolers being there the original owner didn't mod anything or work on it himself so I can't image he added them later on.

Stock dual oil coolers were probably added by a previous owner. They were a popular (and still are) essentially bolt-on modification. Same for many other things, like ‘R’ front lip.

The sunroof is VERY hard to add, so that's probably true.

The Bose system is also VERY hard to add, so that's true as well.

Most likely your car is a touring. There is a way to find out exactly by VIN, I think someone on the forum could look that up. May also be worth calling your Mazda dealer or getting up with Mazda USA, it may show up in their system with the trim package. But, most likely you have a touring.

As others have said, a 93 model with a sunroof is practically guaranteed that is a touring. But you never know what people swap in or out throughout the years.

Looks like they did away with the touring all together in 95 but in 94 both the touring and the PEP were offered. I have a 94 PEP and the only thing that differed from a 94 touring is the lack of bose.

Yup and that's why we can't really go by TRIM options anymore. For instance, my 94 Montego PEP is now yellow (not CYM), has dual oil coolers, R1/2 strut bar, R1/2 suede seats, and at one point (since removed) I had the R1/2 lip and the bose system with the appropriate cargo cover (as Dale said it was kinda of a pain but not impossible by any means). Note that none of those components came with the PEP and so without a VIN good luck figuring out what trim my car originally was.

Others have even purchased a solid roof skin from mazda and completely removed the sunroof... Talk about mudding the waters even further

Forgot to mention the lip, I have that as well haha. I have a VIN I just thought there was no identifier info in it beyond if it's US spec and the year based on the following guide from Banzai. I've PMed j9fd3s for more info
Banzai Racing RX7 Vin ID

Generally speaking, the MSC Code (Model System Catalog is a rough translation) is what spells out trim-level options. Japanese FDs range from F100-xxx (Type-X from 10/1991) to F177-xxx (Spirit R Type A). North America is similar, but goes FD01, FD02, etc. There's a section in the back of the Parts Catalog that spells out what options (transmission, sunroof, suspension, etc) go with what MSC Code. Beyond that, one has to dig into the Model Identifier codes which denotes how the vehicle is equipped beyond the standardized trim-grade equipment (think: PEP package).
