Expert Help Needed - Turbo Question

I am new to the RX7 world, and recently purchased a 94 FD. Under some hard driving conditions a couple of weeks ago, it started loosing power, there was the sound of alot of air being lost, (you could hear it from inside the car), and it no longer made the pssssst from the BOV. After spending some time under the hood, we think we found the problem. In one of the flanges to the Turbo there is a hole big enough to stick you finger in. In checking the RX-7 Workshop manual, page C-26, it looks like I have blowned off the Air Pipe and Control Valve. I have a diagram from the Mazda dealer but it is too large to attach. So may initial questions are ...... Is this Air Pipe necessary? Is what the manuals refers to as the Air Pipe really the BOV, which would explain why we no linger hear he psssst? Should I replace the missing parts or just cap it? Based on the answer, I am sure I will have additional questions. Thanks for your help.

Replace the split hoses with OEM or silicone replacements and keep it original. You didn't do anything other than split an old dried out hose that could no longer handle the pressure. Some say you don't need the blow off valve other's feel it should be kept. Hose Tecniques has anything you may need in the way of silicone hose replacements.

Item 2 on page C-26 are all vital parts of the turbo system. The coupler between item 2 / C-26 and Item 7 on C-24 is a very popular place to develop boost leaks like you described. Good on ya for finding that one yourself. Replace the coupler and you're back in business.

You also need the blow off valve. The only optional part of those are the pipes leading from the BOVs to the airbox - if you disconnect them you get an audible BOV sound, although at risk of sucking unfiltered air into the system.

BTW, where in PA are you?

Hi thanks for the replies. I will most likely have more questions, when I get the hammer out. I am at work and don't have the manual handy.

Dave, I am in New Freedom Pa. Thats about 50 miles south of Harrisburg on Rt 83. My son got me hooked on the RX7. He has two. A really fast 93, and a 94 that is all tricked out but has a blown motor. Because of the mods made to his cars, I can't just pop open the hood and see what a stock setup looks like.

Thanks for responding cantgostraight. The issue is more than a split hose. The part of the turbo body that sticks up and holds the hose and BOV is missing. It looks like I blew the whole thing off or it was never there and I blew out the cap/plug. All that is there is the hole. K&D Rotory sent me and old one they had laying around the shop, which has the part that sticks up. I had the car tuned by them. They did a great job.(I need to figure out how to downsize pictures). I am trying to find out if I should just cap the one I have or go to the trouble to install the new one. Thanks again.

Quick way to downsize pictures.... open it in MS Paint, control-A to select all, then go to image>stretch/skew and type in smaller numbers than 100%. Keep them the same to make sure aspect is the same. then save as so you don't overwrite the old file (just add a number at the end). Post up the new file and yuo're in business.

Another way to get pictures on the forum is a piture hosting site. I use Photobucket and it does an excellant job of posting full size full clarity pictures for free. Not hard to use just upload and then copy the link it provides and paste it in the thread. Sounds like you may have poped a cap off the part sticking up as the part would still be in the engine comartment if it was an original item (the vacuum hose attached to it would still be holding the item, a cap would just be gone) if you want to send me a picture I can host it for you. PM me and I'll give you my email address.

Hi guys, thanks for responding. I had to order the o-ring and a gasket and I won't have them until Wednesday, so it looks like Sunday of next week until I get to give your suggestions a try. I will also work on the pictures, I am sure I will need them later. The plot thickens with this car. I took it to get it inspected and it failed. The previous owner removed all, I mean all of the EGR componets. All I have are seven couplers from the wiring harness laying in front of the intake manifold. Everything else is gone. So I am sure I will need help getting this installed. Maybe that is why K&D Rotory said this car was so strong. Everything has been removed, including the A/C and Power Steering. I can't wait to see the bill for this. Anyhow have a great weekend. Thanks for your help

Ouch. The good thing is that EGR isn't found on all FDs, so maybe you can provide evidence that it's not required.

The good news is that KD probably has all the used parts you need laying around for a very cheap price. Labor is the big worry.
