DP + intake = new ECU?

I've read several of you talk about the 2-3 mod rule for the ECU upgrade......... does a racing beat air intake count? I only plan to put this in and a dp shortly....... I hope like hell just those won't force me into another 400+ for a new ECU...........

Whaddya think.......???

Thanks,

David

The "common" wisdom is that three mods will require an ECU. You could be perfectly safe with those two mods. However, every car is different and yours might NOT be OK with two mods. I see that you don't have any mods yet either, but after your downpipe is installed, I would wait until you get boost and water temp gauges before upgrading anything else. I am stock except for a downpipe and am waiting on the new custom gauges from Omori that will exactly match stock, before I upgrade my cat-back. I will then wait until I can afford both an intake and an ecu to be installed simultaneously.

BTW, the racing beat intake will be even worse at drawing hot air back through the intercooler than the stock air box. If you don't want to upgrade to a new airbox (M2, rx7fashion, CWC, SR), I would do the poor man's cold air mod as detailed on Rob Robinette's site instead.

Your car is fine for now without a new ecu.I would go ahead and get a boost gauge and you might as well get an AFRatio guage while your at it. Then install the downpipe.you can get away with a cat back for a little while too but this will have you boosting a little high.So just make sure you get a ECU shorty there after.I ran with 4-5 mods without a ECU for close to 6 months. While I was spiking at 15 lpds on occasion. I had no major problems.I could have just been lucky. You just have to do what you feel comfortable with.

You will be fine for now. Don't get a midpipe or you will have spikes like

You should be ok for a while. I've been running the RB with a K&N on the stock CPU for 1+ years. I need to get an A/F gauge, but the car runs richer at idle (not sure at WOT). I do find that this setup greatly amplified my 3k hesitation, though. Probably for this reason alone it would be good for me to get a PFC. I do get 14psi spikes in the winter, but since the air is cooler I don't worry about it (13 psi summer). Part of my spike may be do to my RB 12lb flywheel (car spools much faster). I would say get an A/F gauge and see if the car runs right.

What about if all you have is a streetported engine, highflow twins and a catback? Could I also throw in a Downpipe?

I would be careful with the streetport...means more air is going in there and not the right amount of fuel. Get an intake and downpipe but first get an ecu and you will be screaming

The engine revs faster....I don't think this has any affect on whether or not the turbos spike. Typically that is from a free flowing exhaust and intake with improper wastegate control.
