Lightbulb Could this be a lubricating technique for the Apex Seals?

My boss on his RX-7 uses some kind of motorcycle oil and pours three cap full of it into his gas tank before he gets gas all the time. I was wondering if anyone has heard of this. He has been doing this on his 3 rotor as well and his 3 rotor lasted for 5 years now.

It's commonly called "pre-mixing". It's not unusual. Personally I rely on the OMP under normal conditions, but before an autoX event I'll add a little 2-cycle oil before gasing up. How much depends on how much fuel I'm putting in.
Some owners have removed the OMP for various reasons and pre-mix all the time.
If you don't know what an OMP (sometimes referred to a MOP) is, do a search.

Anything that is TCW-3 rated will work fine. I've used everything from cheapo wal-mart brand to Castrol Marine stuff.

If you really want to get hxc about premix use Idemitsu, its a premix designed for rotary engines. http://www.idemitsu-usa.com/page_210.htm

I use Idemitsu premix also. I get mine from RP (www.rx7.com). Since I'm running a working OMP I'll only put in 4oz. per tank, or about half what they suggest.

It does increase the longevity of the engine. Sometimes I think I can hear and feel the difference but thats probably not true.

Any 2-cycle oil should do. I forget what the correct amount was. It may be .4 to 1 gallon of gas. I forget what brand I use but its a non-synthetic.

I also use 4oz per full tank of idemitsu premix with a functional omp.

Tears on a river. Thats less than the recommended mixture for 1 gallon. I realize that your OMP is functioning, but what youre doing is pointless.

No... The ratio should be about 1oz to 1 gallon.

I have been doing 1.28 ounces : 1 gallon which is about 20 ounces of premix for a 15 gallon fill up. My OMP is eliminated

I have spoken to various knowledgeable individuals, some recommended to do strictly 1 oz : 1 gallon, others have told me any where from 1.5 - 2 oz : 1 gallon

A 4:1 ratio premix:gas and your exhaust would probably smoke like a chimney.

I am in the process of breaking my engine in right now and have been running roughly 1.28 ounces of premix to 1 gallon of gas in conjunction with the ZDDPlus additive in my oil.

Because the premix is heavier than the gas, it will sit at the bottom of the tank if the car has been off for a while. This will cause a bit of smoke at start up but once the premix has been mixed in with the gas and the engine heats up, it goes away.

About to install my AEM Water/Methanol Injection Kit.... too bad I wont be able to really utilize it till I get the car tuned =(

Youre way off, pal. 1 ounce of premix in 1 gallon of gas would be a 128:1 ratio. 32:1 is considered acceptable/recommended. I bet youve never owned a 2 stroke vehicle. Try experience instead of heresay next time.

32:1? Maybe for a true two stroke, but you forget that in a 2 stroke, the oil is lubricating the crank bearing as well.

128:1 is commonly recommended as the max for a supplemental (OMP functional) mix ratio. Pettit recommends 128:1 ratio of fuel:protek r for racing on thbeir web site.

Sweet mother of mary 32:1 ...... I've never owned a 2 stroke.... but it sounds like you've never owned a rotary with that figure... that would create a smoke screen to make a clean getaway that's for sure!

I have seen everything from 85:1 - 130:1 for premix only, and around 200:1 for premix + Oil metering pump.

Simmer bud.... Idemitsu (the company) suggests 1/2oz. per gallon of gas when premixing. So 4oz a tank is (roughly) 1/4oz per gallon of gas on a full tank.

As quoted from the Idemitsu website:

"Inherently with many rotary engines, the entirety of the rotor and housing are not being sufficiently lubricated, resulting in premature wear or damage. In order to increase lubrication within the rotary, Idemitsu developed Idemitsu Rotary Premix. At 1/2 oz per gallon of fuel, it is a cost effective way lubricate more of your engine and prevent premature catastrophic damage. "

http://www.idemitsu-usa.com/page_210.htm

It's assumed that Idemitsu is talking about pre-mix ratio's where you are relying on the pre-mix to lube the engine (aka, OMP removal) so if 1/2 oz. per gallon is sufficient for them, than 1/4 oz. per gallon is sufficient for your regular driver with a functioning OMP.

Just because we can also use ashless 2-stroke premix does NOT mean we're driving a 2-stroke engine.

32:1 is WAAAYYY too much. lol smoke screen.

Idemitsu recommends 1/2oz per gallon (256:1) with the OMP removed.

From Royal Purple:

For a pure racing application where the metered oil pump has been disabled or removed, again based on the actual engine and modification level, the ratio could vary from 150:1 to 600:1. For this application, we recommend our 2-Cycle TCW III Racing or the standard 2-Cycle TCW III.
128:1 is plenty for an engine without the OMP.

I respectfully disagree with all of you. I agree that 4oz/gal is "Extreme" for a rotary but so is removing the omp. 2 strokes tend to smoke because of the high oil/fuel ratio necessary for effective, fuel-based, combustion-chamber lubrication.

I run 50:1, no OMP on the egnine, and there isnt a smoke screen.

Try it before you say "Smoke Screen"
