Ok this is gonna sound alittle out there but here it goes. Im gonna need a new clutch relatively soon. Stocker just isnt holding anymore. While im in there I plan on putting in a lighter flywheel also. Anyhow to my question. Is it possible to change the clutch/flywheel without a lift? I dont have access to a lift and am hardcore DIY, I think paying labor fees is a waste of money when I am more than capable of doing things myself. Can this job be done in the garage/driveway with jack/jackstands? Is there enough room to get the tranny out of the way using this method? Any help from anyone that has done it this way would be appreciated. I dont wanna tear into this job and realize its not doable half way through.

 

On my 94 mustang, the job would take about 2-3 hours with out a lift, just jackstands.

Very tempting to do the clutch/flywheel job on my 94 FD but shy away...the job required few special tools. Gonna leave it up to Gotham Racing...

But to answer your question, yes it can be done w/o a lift...but jackstand will be extended all way up.

 

shop manual and proper tools no problem. i did it on jackstands on my back. three times....don't ask. just make sure you have someone helping. i had so help. kvn

 

Ive done it by myself in the driveway, nothing but jack , stands and a small craftsman set. Only "special" tools you may want to pick up 1st is the flywheel socket ( I believe 54mm), and if you want to buy flywheel stopper it will make the job alot easier as well.

 

Great! I was hoping this was gonna be doable. I can get a few friends to help out too, they arent the most mechanically inclined but they are good at grabbing wrenches and what not while im under the car. Hahaha. I assume you all used an impact wrench to tackle the flywheel nut then?

 

CHeck out racingbeat's website under their flywheel section for FDs. They sell a flywheel stopper bar, and a removal bar, which is nothing but the socket welded onto the end of a very long bar. Nothing fancy, and probably not a necessity, but works well for me.

Good info on that link. Another note to mention is that those 21mm bolts on the PPF are TIGHT! I couldnt believe how tight they were the 1st time I was removing them. Took a good 2-3' bar to get them off.
