Auto to 5-sp differential

Anyone know how much a used rear 5-sp diff would cost. I hear that will give me a little more low end torque with my auto. Is this a hard thing to swith out? Can you just buy new gears...is that easier?

what about the high end? If you are on the hwy are you going to run at like 4k rpms? Seems like that would make for shorter engine life.

The Auto's 4th gear is slightly taller than 5th in the manual box so even with 4.10 gear on an auto you will be running lower rpms the frwy than a 5spd.

Yeah, you can get a used 4.1 ring and pinion for about that much, but we have to assume he's going have someone put it in - $500+ in labor at least? Of course, you being the thrifty automotive equivilant of Bob Villa, you probably over looked that.
