Android Auto Double Din

I'm wanting to upgrade my head unit to have Android Auto, obviously everything says it won't fit... I know that that isn't true, but my question is I will need the cage and a trim piece to actually install it, but to my luck only see 1 cage and it's for pioneer. What did everyone use to get their units installed?

I used a Pioneer ADT-VA133 double DIN install kit to put my double-DIN Kenwood unit in, worked great. This is how it looks installed.

I second the ADT-VA133. It didn't fit my sony XAV-AX210SXM but a little bending got it to work out.

Thank you both! Seems like pioneer kit is the only one on the market people use, and one way or another works on majority of units.

As an alternative if you are still looking into it I went single din and went with the pioneer avh-3500nex. It has a foldout screen that has all the functionality but lets you keep your pocket in the spot below it

I agree that the 3500 Nex it's awesome radio plus you can hook dual cameras, and if supported you can have all your gauges connected to be monitor from the head unit or use a newer type ecu like Haltech or AEM that can be monitor through the head unit. Anyway the only company I found that you can monitor up to 16 input from the head unit is call ZADA Tech (Full colour AV graphical multi gauge monitoring and control system) this setup can be costly due to how many sensor you needed.
I am currently searching a way to connect the Apexi Power Fc through the rs 232 cable but I am not sure if it work but I found this company (https://gaugeart.com/product/gaugear...r/#description) Cheapest so but I am not sure if it will work? Other options is to go with PLX Devices which use an app can be monitor on the phone that can be mirror to the head unit.
I am trying to clean up my interior.

Hey guys quick question what’s the biggest screen size a double din headunit fit? 6.8 inches right? Also I think like the original person posted but all I see is pioneer headunit on fd and I’m really looking for something else. Are you happy with your kenwood?

You should be able to install any double din headunit, so you'd just need to go ask crutchfield which one they sell with the biggest screen.

That said any headunit geared towards android auto and carplay is probably going to have roughly the same screen size. I also use the AVH-3500 folder that someone else mentioned already.

Since you're contemplating Android Auto, you could take it a step further and go with an Android Double Din unit, and customize it to your heart's content. There are a variety of screen sizes which replicate the more common commercial offerings, yet have the unrivaled flexibility inherent with the Android OS. Here's what I have in my Expedition since 2016, with a 6.2" screen, actual buttons/***** plus USB & Aux input right on the front.Mine promptly was given a few treats such as Droidsound-E, Astro and other goodies.

Since it's got all the fun stuff like Bluetooth, Wifi, backup camera, RCA and 3.5mm inputs, etc, it's certainly an attractive option for the $135 I paid on ebay for it, while not being too enticing to unwanted attention.

^I got one similar to that for the FD since it had Android and I was going to use it for the app for my ECU (Syvecs) but I couldn't get it to work right. I believe it was something with the scaling on the screen, only a portion of the app would show if I remember right. That and the app for Android wasn't the same as I had on the iPad mini already so I wasn't used to it. I swapped it over to my Pathfinder instead. It's been good for the most part, although I have issues with bluetooth occasionally.

OP, I ended up getting a Pioneer AVIC-8100NEX for the FD. Fits great and has all the functions I need, and Android Auto and Apple Carplay are included. Whatever you end up with, get the Pioneer install kit. I used a cheap one from eBay and I couldn't get the stereo to sit flush with the opening. It's still not completely flush, but it's very close and due to the depth of the stereo it's difficult to get it farther back anyway.

you mind if I get a picture? Not too sure if you are talking about the ADT-VA133 installation kit? Would that kit work with all pioneer head units?

Very cute. Doing a double din retrofit on a first gen Expedition isn't exactly plug & play. There's quite a bit of cutting involved, often in areas and at angles which make it difficult to maneuver a Dremel properly when one is 7" inside the dashboard. Same with the EATC Climate Control retrofit. I was the first one that pulled it off, so I'm not too bothered if it's not 100% flush, square and true. These issues do not occur with a FD. I would imagine that one could reuse the original mounting brackets or some generic L-shaped Double Din mounting brackets to achieve a nice, clean install. Something like these:

Yeah that's the kit I'm talking about. It most likely fits all of Pioneer's double din units, because it fits other brand double dins as well.
