Transmission Question (stick or auto)

well, i have a friend of mine that lives in maine and i decided to sell him my FD for $16K. I decided to get another one with basically stock parts and start over.

but a question arose in my head.

auto - stick?

i wrote a forum like this before but not much feedback.

i like stick and how i can basically take control of the car but auto just seems simplier.

What are "mechanical" reasons i should get an manual instead of a auto. I've seen a couple of supra's, and fd's with Auto's and with the same mods as most RX-7's would do ive seen them do low 10's on the track.

I mean auto would be a lot easier but i just like how stick feels and if there was a reason i should stick with manual i would so any feedback would be great.

thanks

i think autos in fd's were 4 speeds, meaning taller gearing which = less acceleration. But why even consider an auto, when manuals are so much more fun. Unless its a custom paddle shifted auto (f1 style, yeah right!!!) i wouldn't get it. On second thought, no, i still want a clutch. screw ferrari.

The automatic transmission in the FD is a piece. DO NOT GET AN AUTO!

Any one can rebuild the 5 speed easy , the auto may be a hard one to do if you do all the factory manual shows. The 5speed is anly several pages ,the auto is 270 pages ,the motor rebuild is only 90 pages.

Stick has an 8000 RPM redline, versus 7000 for the auto.

Sitck has 4.10 rear gears, versus 3.90 for the auto.

Stick allows you to rev before a launch to get into the boost-producing range of the RPM band for faster launches.

Stick has less drivetrain loss than the auto, which means more power at the wheels.

Stick allows you to choose a gear and stay with it through a turn.

Lots of people make big power on the stick, the auto is less proven and probably weaker.

Most upgraded ECUs seem to only be available for or work best with the stick.

Auto keeps boost up between shifts.

Auto has lower market value, which may allow you to get a car in better condition for the same money, but you won't get as much for it if you sell. Auto cars may also attract buyers that are less likely to drive the car hard, but may also attract those that are less dilligent with the maintenance.

Some folks get auto so their no-stick-driving significant others can also drive the car.

For me, a stick is the best choice for this kind of car.

I may be wrong but won't the auto give you more consistant times at the track, if thats what your into, but if your into controlling the vehicle like it was meant to be controlled go with the stick, much better, just watch that 5th gear thing.
