929 oil filters for Rx-7

Hey all. Thought I'd get the forums wisdom on the use of the
Mazda 929 oil filters. They are taller s but feel lighter then the stock mazda filters. Do they have the same anti drain back feature and do they filter as well? I have the Sakebomb filter pedestal and believe it was stated that these taller filters work with their pedestal and their is no clearance issues. Any info is appreciated.

so it depends, if you get apples to apples the taller filter should have more stuff in it, but there are different types of each filter

G6Y0-14-302-P1 is the US made filter, as is the B6Y1-14-302-9A. these have the filter media in a radial pattern, like you picture. we think its made by Tenneco, they have had a couple different ones, due to problems like not having holes in them, and the threads not being correct and stuff like that.

the JEY0-14-302 is the Japanese 929/Mpv/etc filter, B6Y1-14-302A is the Rx7 one. These have the filter packed differently, so there is more filter in there. the innovation of the short filter was that it had the same amount of filter as the big one, but in a smaller outer size. JEYO-14-302 should be the same different packed filter in a taller case, although i've never cut one open. Made by Toyo Roki, the original manufacturer.

its a long way of saying that the G6Y0-14-302-P1 is bigger than the B6Y1-14-302A, but likely has less filter in it.

Wow, great explanation and thank you for the quick response. Think I'll use the shorter filter on this oil change and see of I can track down some of the better quality Japanese part number tall filters. I see Rotary Performance sells a Denso brand that should be the equivalent to the short Mazda filter for a good price so maybe I'll pick one of those up if I don't find the taller better filter.

I've been using an oil filter for a 1995 626 LX (with the V6) for years. It screws right on and fits perfect but is a little taller, hence more filtering media.

It may even be the same part number as that 929 one . WIX is a good brand of oil filter.

if you're looking at Mazda they only have the two, B6Y1 and JEY0 (its a zero, Mazda doesn't use i, o, or q). if you're looking at the aftermarket they will have more than two, because they suck, and have based fitment from old NLA Mazda part numbers

I've used Purolator filters PL14610 on my RX-7, it's fitment for a Mazda 626/929 and others. Slightly taller than the RX-7 filter, although I didn't think to check the weight or research the relief valve pressure. I checked it today, here's what I found on the Purolator website:
Relief pressure is 14-18psi for the PL14612 RX-7 filter, and 12-15psi for the 626/929 filter.
Weight is 6.8g for the RX-7 filter, and 6.9 for the 626/929 filter.
Flute Count (not sure what that means) is 14 for both.
If that info exists for the OEM filters, I haven't found it yet.

If you have both filters and some spare time, try cutting them open and taking out the filter media inside, as shown here:

Lately I've been using filters from Wix or NAPA Gold, I think an oil-specific site like bobistheoilguy.com claimed they are some of the best you can buy. The Wix website claims their relief valve on the RX7 oil filter 515356XP opens at 8-11psi. Assuming everything else was the same (which it's not) I would prefer the filter with the highest relief pressure to avoid sending unfiltered oil into the engine. Now that I've got an oil pressure sensor, I'll switch back to Purolator and see if the oil pressure in datalogs looks any different than what I've been seeing with Wix filters.

Personally I think fuel-in-oil dilution is more of a concern than oil filtration media on rotary engines, my car's oil dipstick and oil filler cap smell like gasoline most times I check them. I don't drive many miles lately, but I've been changing the oil once per year (or before major track days) and that ends up being about 300-1000 miles per oil change. I don't always change the oil filter if it's got less than 1000 miles on it. If I had a lot of spare time and money, I might try to test used oil after 100, 500, 1000 miles in my RX-7. I suspect the fuel dilution will be a problem before the filter gets clogged. Project Farm channel on youtube has some great oil tests, in case you've missed them:

I've always used the FC oil filter. Purolator Pure One part PL14459. It's a bit bigger, easily available, and fits just fine.

Purolators listing doesn't actually make any sense, but the closest old Mazda number is the B6Y0 or N231, both of which got replaced by the B6Y1-14-302A like 20 years ago,
these are the published specs, kind of skimpy

i like the Wix, its like the only one with complete data, fitment is basically correct too which is nice

and then this " Laboratory Test Performance per ISO 454812 18 grams dirt (WIX 51515), 99% efficient at 23 microns (Based on WIX 51515, WIX 51356, WIX 57060)"

Since a filter only holds 18 grams of dirt a high mileage filter will typically filter less, so it takes longer to fill up the 18grams dirt capacity

oh and just to add the insult, check prices too, MSRP on a B6Y1-14-302A is $10.26, and often can be bought for less if you buy more than one.
the parts store around here wanted $12, for their janky house brand
